She might have needed to drop out of school to help with making money for her mother as her father (seems accepted as Jackpot) might have left them. This way, she didn’t learn more of the intricacies of how higher level magic works.
I think most unicorns have a very limited understanding of magic, since it’s something that must be learned and exercised.

Her unicorn-magic isn’t even particularly weak, it’s just that her instinctive control/ intuitive understanding of her magic is really bad. Just a very simple explanation from Glimmy was enough to let her do things we’ve seen a talented mage like Twi practice repeatedly.
