The comics are canon to the comic universe/timeline, just like every other show or movie that also has official comics.  
Especially now that alternate timelines are canon to the main show.

Despite how popular FlutterMac and RainbowMac are, I just don’t see any evidence for them happening. I can understand CheeriMac because even though they were drugged, there’s still plenty of interaction between them in Hearts and Hooves Day enough for people to think they looked really cute with each other. I can understand LunaMac, FleetMac, TeaMac and SweetMac (I just made up the last two, I don’t know what their ship names are) because they all either get romantic with him or at least pine over him in the comics. MarbleMac makes the most sense because they seemed to be really chummy and blushy with each other in Hearthbreakers.
 
RainbowMac and FlutterMac have nothing. Neither of them have had any meaningful interactions with Big Mac. The only reason Fluttershy is paired with him at all is because they have similar personalities but there’s no interaction between them in the show to really substantiate anything going on between them.
 
That said, this is not to say that nobody should ship them; if anyone thinks FlutterMac or RainbowMac is cute in fanworks for whatever reason, then who am I to tell them not to enjoy it? Let people ship Big Mac with anypony, I don’t really care, just as long as they don’t expect everyone in the fandom to support it, and especially don’t expect the showrunners to cater to any crackships.

Well people are perplexed because Rainbow is the only one there with nothing canon to hint that she’d go with Big Mac. Let’s see…  
Cheerilee - almost married him (howbeit while drugged with magic)  
Fleetfoot - had fantasies about getting married and having foals with him  
Luna - hung all over him at a fair and then kissed him on a ferris wheel.  
Marble - came as close to making out with him as a shy pony could in a children’s cartoon, and pretty clearly shipped with him by Pinkie  
Fluttershy - well he looked at her waggling plot once while visibly sweating (though that’s a bit of a stretch)  
Rainbow Dash - ???? Did I miss something?
 
Also what about Tealove? She had a catfight with Fleetfoot over him. >>412859  
And Sweetcream Scoops? She was visibly flirting with him at a party. >>295158
 
Though wow, either way, no character has more ships with canon reasoning than Big Mac. That stud. And who can blame them? I’d hit it.

Yeah, I mean as far as I can tell, MacDash is second only to SoarinDash as the most popular straight RD ship.  
And yet comments both here and at the source show people being surprised and/or perplexed by her presence in this image.

While obviously not impossible, as close to everyone has been shipped with Rainbow Dash at some point. I usually see her get shipped with Soarin, Gilda, or her friends in the mane six :3

Is MacDash/RainbowMac really that unknown? I was under the impression that it’s a fairly popular ship (perhaps from spending more time on FiMFiction.net than any other pony-related website? I dunno).

No, it definitely looks to me like her gaze is actually focused on something. Maybe she sees us, and is silently wondering if we are responsible for this.

Not all of them are feeling the harem anime thing. Marble and Cheerilee are disappointed, Luna looks like she’s found something better to do, and Rainbow Dash clearly sees a truck coming and has frozen still in its headlights.
 
Fluttershy, on the other hand, is clearly into this and trying to contain a joyful squeal.

All kinds of shipping is great with me. The only issue that would drive me crazy (if I was a friend or love intrest) is how Big Macintosh is the strong silent type. Maybe hes great at writing letters?
