Oh, I agree it’s fun to joke about. There was another version by a different artist where they were brother and sister, or with Shining Armor and Fleur (Fancy Pant’s girlfriend) arguining over one of them tripping over the other and both getting covered in mud and Cadance getting pissed even though she just forced them into it. That’s why you shouldn’t mess with love.

I think everyone is forgetting the context of their argument. The girl wants to go the spa for a hooficure, with the guy saying she’s not because he’s already paid for 3 this month. She also mentions that all her girlfriends are getting theirs done.
 
So clearly they’re not strangers. And if they were just friends or related what place does the guy have to tell her she’s not going? It wouldn’t be his business.
 
The only logical thing you can take from this scene is that they’re in a relationship, because the dialogue sounds like a couple arguing over money because of joint finances.

Hmm, those things? The specifics on how they work, I don’t know, but assuming they are indeed mind controlled or something similar, I’d say they wouldn’t be able to be compelled to hurt or betray someone they were close to.
 
So, like, it would work on strangers and such, but if ordered to hurt their lover or something, there’s no way it’d ever work, the power of friendship or love would allow them to break free. It’s not that mind control is impossible for someone as evil as Sombra, it’s that the friendship or love and bonds between people will easily overcome it, so they’d never take an action that would betray or hurt someone they were close to.
 
For pitting tons of strangers against other strangers, it would be a fairly effective but incredibly cruel army, but it wouldn’t ever work on making friends or lovers hurt or betray each other. It puts Sombra at an immediate disadvantage, because if any of them came into contact with or saw a close friend or lover, they’d inevitably end up breaking free. You know, kind of like how Cadance broke Shining free from the trance he was in, and the power of love proceeded to throw out a changeling army.
 
You’re right that the whole alternate universe shown there is in very, very bad shape though, and all sorts of things were messed up. Friendship and love couldn’t ever ‘break’ or anything, and would still ultimately overcome, and I’m sure good will inevitably triumph even there, but it’s still a world thrown into chaos and there’s plenty of disarray.

And they didn’t seem to overcome it with love or friendship. Then again, that was part of Starlight messing with the timelines so friendship was broken and useless anyway. So maybe it would under normal circumstances.

Sombra seems to mostly make use of straight up slavery and subjugation, not mind control. Either way, regardless of what it is, it can and will be broken. In the case of slavery and stuff, the alicorns and others aren’t going to tolerate it, and mind control can be overcome by friendship or love.

The point is that it wouldn’t work on ponies who already love someone. Their love, bond, relationship, and so on, would be so much stronger than it and all.
 
Besides, Cadances spell obviously wasn’t even some sort of grimdark mind control/brainwash spell in the first place. It was more of a little, gentle ‘nudge’ to help the two ponies with their quarrel, no destruction of free will involved. I wouldn’t even begin to compare it with that love potion, because there’s no comparison to be made, though it also wouldn’t work on ponies who love someone, mind you. Other things could be said about the love potion, but I want to keep this post brief.
 
Anyway, the magic, power and strength of friendship and of course, especially love is a central theme of the series, nobody is going to be torn away from the one they love and share a bond with in some sort of awful bad end by some freak grimdark mind control nonsense, end of story.

Considering love potions are a real thing in Equestria, I don’t see why this here shouldn’t be possible. I mean, I understand the need to deny it so one can sleep better, of course… but that’s all it is, really.

Nah, no way. Besides, loyalty is extremely important, among other things. It’d be extremely disgusting if someone just up and abandoned their lover, though obviously the spell in this comic is being portrayed as some sort of grimdark brainwashing spell or something.

This is why you can’t assume that two ponies who happen to be somewhere together are a couple. They could have been friends, or maybe just two ponies who have never met before who started talking to each other, or maybe they’re siblings. Who knows?

Eh, it comes off as harsh because I didn’t want to understate things. I find stuff like this to be really, really high on the grimdark scale, even if it simply isn’t possible and would never happen.
 
Not really an insult to the artist or anything, as completely outrageous, grimdark, or silly (or a mix of all of those) stuff gets drawn all the time, it’s just that this one I found particularly dark and depressing, and as an extension of that I went more out of my way to mention how it isn’t a possibility.

We’re talking about the world of MLP, where magic is real, and it’s not even remotely realistic there either. As I said, if the ponies already had lovers, it simply wouldn’t ever work on them, because their love and bond and all that is so much stronger.
