In the comics the dragons were called pets and work as servants when they weren’t playing around. They were the same age as the baby ponies maybe younger.

Fiery sounds manipulative and unstable, Pearl too much the perfect victim for that sort of predator. Fit your own too-common emotionally/physically abusive spouse story to it, work in a bit about the inability to have kids and ping it off their insecurities and macho expectations and you’re golden. Holds the toys together. “Now grimdark”.
 
The system is G1, and it hurts ponies and dragons alike.

Fiery actually IS Garble, who got tired of G1’s general shiteness, ran off and changed his name, and now despises ponies based on his past experinces.
