You know I was expecting Starlight to be more spiteful torwards Sunburst since he seemed to have forgotten she existed.
Starlight just seemed to cordial torwards him. It seems kind of odd.

I don’t think you can really say every time, unless there was some huge backlash I’m not aware of against, for example, Octavia or Minuette.
 
Huge backlash, no, but about half the reactors went ‘Enope, I’m not calling her Minuette, she’s Colgate’ - so the name was resisted at least.  
But, really, Octavia was just fairly accurate to ‘fanon’; She wasn’t so much expanded, as nailed down in canon.  
No idea why people tolerated Minuette; I liked her, she’s got an infectious energy just like her old friend Lyra, but she is nothing like the fan-consensus of Colgate would have her.

People are obsessed with Derpy because they like empty vessel characters they can put their own spin on. That’s why they get mad every time the show canon expands a minor character.
