Nah
She’s not special, at least not compared to the like of twilight and co. She is their equal in importance and character potential. She gets a lot of art beacuse of her cool design and her percieved bad girl attitude.
Who among the primary cast haven’t stepped up when it mattered? That’s kind of what marks them as the heroes to begin with, and all of them have their failures too. What makes Sunset so special?
Trixie is just misunderstood…
But yeah I was gonna say the same thing about sunset but you said a lot clearer And SHORTER then I could have.

When I said she had nothing left to prove I meant she didn’t have to prove her sincerity to the other characters as she has alreay done so twice over now. As for sunset’s evil plan in the first movie she never said she was gonna conquer equestria till after she put on the crown and was transformed into a demon. The most she said was that twilight wouldnt be safe “even in equestria” which could have meant that once sunset had mastered the crown and become an alicorn she was gonna challenge twilight for her position as princess.
And on a side, if demon sunset could transform snips and snails into monsters then odds are she was going to do the same to the rest of the students. A surgical strike by an army of monsters into the palace where all three heads of state are sounds like it could do some damage.
People think she ‘earned her popularity’ by stepping up when it matters. The fact that she sometimes fails except when its crunch time makes her more relatable to those people.
Either way, I wouldn’t be taking popularity advice from a girl who feels the need to refer to herself in the third person and big-talk herself as being ‘great and powerful’ all the time - bit of a pot/kettle situation there.
Thank you for the level-headed reply, but I never said anything about liking or disliking, and I’m afraid minority and majority don’t matter in the face of objective facts: You said she had earned her popularity and had nothing left to prove. This is false. She has not earned the praise she gets, she was sympathetic and made some cute faces in EQG2, made a considerable change in character, did a ‘cool’ thing, and was lavished with ‘Best Pony’ ever since.
I like her too, believe it or not, but I’d rather not just overlook her laundry line of failure in the name of sheer favoritism.
You’re reasoning for disliking sunset is perfecly reasonable and hey, its your opinion.
But you’re in the minority on this one and for good reason, sunset is a cool and genuinly likeable character who started out kind of boring and bland and her leadership of the humane six is something that I personally hope is explored further.
Sunset is an overrated failure. The only times she succeeds in anything is when there’s a big magical boost to do everything for her.
-Her plans in EQG1 all sucked and failed miserably, and until she got the Element, she wasn’t even a real threat for longer than five minutes.
-Until her big, magic moment in EQG2, she pretty much just made things worse and worse, her biggest contribution being calling for help from someone (supposedly) more competent.
-Same in EQG3, where she was at least smart enough to keep trying to call for help.
Sorry, but Sunset really isn’t that great when you think about it. :(
lookin’ at you, cloudkicker
Shimmer has earnt every bit of her popularity and has nothing left to prove. (unlike a certain lavender lout.)
I love how the whole comic was devised to bank on Sunset’s popularity, and backfired spectacularly when they forgot just how much people loved Sunset to start with. Plus they not only forgot that everyone in school loved her too (being set after Rainbow Rocks, what the actual fuck!) but that Apple Bloom, in canon, is not the sort of person who would destroy somebody like this, along with her own sister. She doesn’t have a jealous bone in her. Sweetie Belle, maybe, but even she’s more suited to mischief and silly revenge plots. The one they really should have used was Scootaloo, to give her some well needed depth.
As an aside, I love images like this, testing Sunset’s friendship and making her sad. It makes me wanna make her and the gang hot cocoa. :)
It was coming to her.
