The entire first generation was based around genetic mutations. Voltorb was a Genetically-Altered Pokeball!
 
That said, Pokemon have been given more and more practical purposes as the generations have gone on. Saying “they’ve run out of ideas” is pointless when they clearly have enough to make new games every generation; they said they ran out back in Generation III, they’re still saying it now. Fact is, people want to justify their loss of interest by blaming the franchise, rather than saying “I’m not into it anymore.”

THEY are tons of other animals/fictional creatures they have yet to use. And the “inanimate objects” actually have some legend or mythology behind them.

Crystal and Platinum was running out of ideas. Sun and Moon is simple and provides more opportunities for legends based on folklore.

This will eventually happen because the people who made Pokemon have officially run out of ideas.
