If you squint, she looks like a giant in an apple orchard. That’s what it looked like to me at first glance, anyway. Beautiful art either way.

The idea was to alternate between an old image which hadn’t been seen for ages, and a relatively new one that seemed underrated.  
However, in practice that hasn’t been the case.  
Several of the recent ones have all been old images, with no new stuff between them.

As I understand it one of the original intents for the feature image was to give some exposure to images that didn’t get much of it. Ergo, old images with low scores.

Stupid thing is, I currently have 9 images that have a score over 100.  
And without exception, they all feature the Dazzlings. (All but 1 ponified too).
 
That is why I’ve stuck with them.  
I do draw other characters. They just don’t seem to be as well-liked.
 
Anyway, I am going to leave it at this.

Must admit, I hadn’t heard of this artist. (Although I do recognise the style. Seen a few of their pictures in the past).

I admit, around 8 times out of 10 I never heard of the artist of the featured image. Which I think is good as it allows me to see the rest of their art and go faving frenzy (whether it’s here or DA).

Just keep at it, you’ve got a lot of great ideas that a lot of people on this site like. As much as those pictures with the Dazzlings are great, you might have a better shot with one of the Mane Six (for example), and see how it goes.

Well, I usually try to see how high a score I can achieve here.  
My artwork is always safe rated, (with, currently, a single exception). I have kids so I need to be careful what I draw.  
My hope is to hit that elusive 3 figure barrier, which is difficult with hand-drawn safe art.  
I’ve managed it a few times, but my last few uploads have been shoved off the front page within minutes of being uploaded, so they’re not getting the views.
 
That Aria pic there is a prime example. It was off the front page within 10 minutes. Just wanted to draw a bit of attention to it, (despite the fact I missed drawing her ears…) which is why I linked it really.  
The Sonata one matches up.  
Thinking of doing an Adagio one to finish the set, but not quite decided what I’m doing with that one yet.

Likewise, while this isn’t in the official criteria, I personally try to nominate/vote for images that are from artists who are still active in the fandom. The featured image slot gives artists a ton of exposure and attention, and it’s kinda a waste to give that to someone who’s not been around for two years and won’t even care/notice.

We do have tens of thousands of potential featured images, keep in mind there are criteria for them, they have to be rated safe, and we tend to go for the visually appealing but low scoring(usually) images, and we usually prefer artists that haven’t been featured in the past.  
if artists have any drawings that fit the criteria then they may get suggested for the featured image voting process.
 
Just keep at it, keep learning and improving. And keep drawing new things, it gives us more to choose from and increases your chances. Though don’t draw just for the sake of trying to get featured, draw because you want to draw.
 
Also constantly mentioning it and complaining will not help your chances, just saying.
