Okay, I see we’ve got a lot of sticklers for historical accuracy in this thread. Tell you what: you find me someone from ancient Persia or wherever who could read modern English (or medieval French, if that’s how you want to play it), and I’ll retract my earlier statement.
“Barbarian” as a word was created by Greeks to describe Non-Greeks, and so many of these “barbarians” were often from perfectly serviceable nations and cultures of their own who were just invading, like the Persians, or the Goths, or Vikings, or Mongols. The scrappy thieving types tended to be highwaymen who fled into the wilderness, and often come from the same nation that gives them the “barbarian” title.
