Only thing darker might be Mario’s death by electrocution animation in Mario Galaxy. Where he becomes a skeleton. (Though, that might’ve been a game glitch, sense it doesn’t happen in the sequel.)
He also had some funny death animations in the Gameboy Donkey Kong ‘94 game. (Almost as many as Dirk from Dragon’s lair.)

Possibly one of the darkest Mario games. Ironic, given how people used to complain about how “kiddy” the graphics style of the Paper Mario games looked.
