Me mum always said “takes two to argue.”
It can get hard to not argue, but she’s got a point.
@LemonDrop
Eh, I can kinda see both sides. I’ll admit I’ve been talking with Lemon so he’s got a bit of advantage on persuading me, but he makes some good points about some decisions they’ve made that have really hurt them. Switching to a newer version of the engine sounds great and all, but they kinda failed to take into account how far back that’d set their development.
Also, I could easily be wrong here, but I’m pretty sure it’s a much more sound approach to make a portion, debug it, make a portion, debug it, make a portion, and debug it, as opposed to trying to make the entire thing. Coding isn’t building a house, but what little I’ve done, and modding, 3d modeling, vectoring, plastic modeling, designing - they all are subject to this common construction metaphor:
If there’s something wrong with the foundation, it’s a lot easier to fix that before you build the house on top, rather than building the house on top anyways, then going back and trying to fix the foundation. Now imagine you’ve built a house around those fundamental flaws.
I mean, heck, recently I’ve done a little work on simulation software. We were working on a bit to simulate General Relativity, and a different university was working on code to make it run more efficiently on supercomputers. That was some parallel development - but we still followed that pattern of design a little, debug, add more, then debug, then add more, etc.
The spells fail more often than work, the chatbox doesn’t like working, and there are no sound effects apart from walking and the spells. Flying is still completely silent. And they’re looking to add more features before fixing any of this?
If you want to make a working product, you really can’t put off debugging forever, and the sooner you get it working, the smoother adding new features will go… Trying to debug one or two flaws at once is hard. But trying to debug 20 interconnected failures? Bugs interact. The interactions and complexity of these things is exponential. Not all bugs interact, but a portion of them do, so it’s still exponential, just an exponential with a coefficient k in front, where k represents the fraction of bugs that interact.
In other words, a stitch in time saves nine. If you’ve got one bug, then you can try all kinds of different things, but you know exactly what you’re looking for.
If you’ve got 3, then do you have 3, or 2 and 1 from their interaction? You tweak it, and 1 bug is gone but bug 2 is far worse and you’ve got a new bug. Should you keep tweaking or take a step back? Was that new bug there all along, but the two bugs cancelled eachother out so you didn’t notice it until you fixed one? Or did you just make a new bug? Your coworker says he’s fixed one but he still has the other. You try to put your tweaks together but then the game won’t even start! These are the kinds of things that happen, and when you get 5 or more, I imagine this can become a nightmare.
The more bugs are in your code, the less you actually know your code. If you don’t fix it and keep track, then eventually you’re looking at something you don’t understand at all and you can’t even make any progress on it.
That’s pretty hilarious. :D
Why do you play it then if it’s so “crappy”? Just looking for new “reasons” to tear it apart because you hope it’ll drive some people away from the game to get “Horse Game” more fans?
I’m not arguing my point to you, I just reveal what a mindless hater you are so that your attempts to undermine the game’s popularity and to ruin it’s success with your hate speeches against it won’t come to fruition.
@TheLoneLampman
I can’t see where telling him that he spreads lies about the game, that he is immature and that he is a whiny, little child can break the rule.
Since all of it is the truth, it’s not even an insult (no matter how much he would call it one in his offense over telling him that truth).
And how do you want to have a normal, calm conversation with such a guy? If someone is talking so rude about the game, puts the works of the developers through the dirt, spreads lies about the game on top and does everything to get the game bad publicity in hope it backfires at it, then it’s bound to get heated.
And that’s also the only thing that makes haters like him shut up sooner or later.
There’s not really a way around that.
I’ve already been banned at least 3 times (but obviously for things like “hacking”), I hope you don’t think that’d stop me from playing their crappy game lol
Now make tll happy and don’t continue arguing your point to me because I’m just gonna let you believe whatever you want.
warningreminder: Rule #0 exists so stop with the insulting comments.You are really immature. Currently, you sound like a little child that is upset because it hasn’t gotten it’s pudding yet, since it’s still in the kitchen and getting prepared.
Not only do you completely fail to understand that a game in development is just supposed to have a lot of bugs, no, you also fail to understand that new things that were implemented DO cause problems at first that need to be found and then fixed later on and that this is exactly what the OSWs are there for; testing bugs, glitches and malfunctions and let the players report them, so that the devs don’t have to waste time with internal test runs.
Quit whining like a oversensitive little child, grow up and learn to be patient. The only problem here is you who is too stupid to wait for a game to be finished.
@LemonDrop
Even resorting to spreading lies now? I thought you couldn’t fall any lower, but apparently I was wrong. If I would be the devs of the game, I would IP-ban your account for a lifetime for that statement.
They don’t ignore the bugs, they just fix them when they think the right moment has come for doing that, not when impatient players like you demand it, and go at the development at their own pace and order. This is not ignoring the bugs, no matter how often you call it that.
Again, the problem here is YOU with your impatience and failure to comprehend that you can’t judge an unfinished game because it has bugs, not Legends of Equestria and how it gets developed exactly.
And too bad that those 90% players who bitch about the game don’t exist and that most people appreciate their hard work, are happy with the results and enjoy the game and let them their time with developing it.
The whiny little children like you are in the minority, so your statement here is wrong.
I honestly can’t confess much under-the-hood knowledge about C#, but when it comes to writing code, the important thing is I can more or less understand it due to the similarity of its structure.
And dear gosh - yeah, I’ve seen stuff like that before… Code that’s just gotten so complex and convoluted that it’s just a nightmare to work with anymore. There really is a point where it’s best off just to start from scratch.
I’d be tempted to launch my own endeavor, actually. I’ve organized a brony club that’s now grown to hundreds of members at my university. Also, unlike LoE, I wouldn’t be shutting out any community suggestions…
May be a year or two down the road when I know programming a lot better, or a few months, or whatnot. But it’s an idea I’ve toyed with a lot before.
Battle immersion doesn’t happen when you abilities either never work or just require you to hopelessly spam the button until they do. I mean really go try to have some “immersive combat on LoE” with its almost non-existent system (I honestly cant figure out if I am using it right at times it is so broken).
They need to just overhaul the entire core of the game honestly, its gross in many places and falling apart due to dumb ideas like “lets upgrade to Unity 5 mid projec-oh what didn’t work very well” or others like “lets change our entire networking system for ‘‘security’’ and hope that works”. At least they should do some fixing on the super unstable areas or something rather than constantly breaking things with newer content.
Again some huge changes they did just made extremely obvious issues and silly CMC here thinks they have the right to just ignore them until 90% of players bitch about them. “Oh yeah I suppose that Unity 5 upgrade did just break every map’s lighting and caused grey boxes to be displayed around on the ground, but hey the users might not notice!”. Some things like the chat box too, dear god the chatbox. Hoooly shit the chatbox retained the same broken-ass bugs for whole versions or more even and every fix either added more bugs or removed functionality (yeah gj removing any markup support past bold and italic guys and even better job just leaving the old class for the chatbox in the code for shits n giggles).
Its just pretty gross for a game that has been in development for what, 5 years?
Also I wouldn’t call C# and C____ “extremely similar” considering C____ is a 30 year old compiled language while C# is newer and relies more on the idea of JIT and runtime environment funsies rather than generating actual machine code, but I mean its syntax looks like C’s because a lot of modern languages tend to.
There’s really not much of a game, yet : p
Learning coding skills. Thinking of joining their team once I know some more C____ (eh, unity uses C#, but the two are EXTREMELY similar…). Maybe I can change that, eh?
I personally think they haven’t put nearly enough value in sound effects. HOLY CRAP do good sound effects (especially environmental) make a HUGE difference in immersion! Battlefield 3 actually did a really good job - typically the Battlefields do. It’s so good sometimes I like to just stand somewhere and appreciate the peaceful stream running through the forest… I’d like to do something like that. Maybe even have random ocassional birds fly by from tree to tree…
Except that is exactly what they do. Trust me I’ve been playing the game for about 2 years now without much interruption and it definitely loses any sort of fun gameplay wise.
Of course they see it. As I said, these are side effects, and they sure appreciate those side effects. I only said that’s not the main motivation.
There’s no need to always assume the worst about a team of game developers, like that they prevent their fans from playing the game constantly to gain more advertisement advantages and popularity.
I dunno. Maybe at first, but I think they’ve at least started to notice that this is good for marketing. Of course it sounds a lot nicer to say they do it for other reasons, but I find it hard to believe that they don’t see what’s happening with this.
@LemonDrop
Chairs are dangerous. Kill more people each year than sharks.
@LemonDrop
Oooh. I have no idea what that is, on phone, I’ll look when back on comp, but I’m glad to hear about another pony game getting good recommendations, that’s comparable to LoE. I quite like LoE.
“You are one of those impatient, whiny players, who lack the intellect to understand that a game in development with flaws isn’t a bad game and who insults the developers and the game because your impatience and dumbness gets the better of you.”
I think I fell out of my chair
I have not forgotten any of the bugs of the game, but I don’t run around and whine how “crappy the game is”.
Apparently, you have problems to grasp simple facts, so I’m spelling it out again:
The game is still in development and bugs in masses are to expect in a game that still isn’t finished.
They don’t owe you a bug-free game before it’s complete.
If you play a game that is still in development and still gets tested with OSWs, then you know what you are in for and you have no right to complain about bugs. You just get what you bargained for.
The OSWs are where they test for bugs. Instead of wasting time and going through additional bug testing phases on their own, the developers let the players test the game and report bugs, so that they can fully concentrate on the development process and on eliminating those bugs.
They also said that wiping out the bugs is not a priority right now and that they go for adding the core features and areas of the game first before they go after the bugs in a major way.
And in which order they develop their game and what they deem more important in the process of development is not for you to decide and it’s also not for you to judge them for their decisions.
You are not the developer of the game.
I haven’t played this game, so I’m taking this with a grain of salt. And even if it should be true, the value of a game in development doesn’t depend on it how bug-free it is.
Fixing bugs first and then adding new content is just one way of developing a game, adding new content and then go into the bug fixing at the end of the development process is another one.
Both of these ways are equally legit, they just set different priorities.
That’s exactly what they are. You are one of those impatient, whiny players, who lack the intellect to understand that a game in development with flaws isn’t a bad game and who insults the developers and the game because your impatience and dumbness gets the better of you.
The game is just fine as it is for one that’s still developed and you can only blame yourself for your aforementioned shortcomings.
>it’s not a crappy game
oy vey
See I can tell you’re one of those people who has only had the experience of playing on the OSW because to me that seems the only way to be able to forget about how buggy the game is. Also, bugs are fine, but bugs that are completely obvious are not. The LoE devs release build after build breaking more features that are literally right in their faces, almost like no effort went in to testing it before release at all. They’ve also had plenty of time to get any progress done, which they’ve wasted making maps rather than improving the codebase.
Go look at a game like equidev as it only has like one developer using the same free unity they are and it is a much more bug-free and nice looking game. Dont give me this shit about “oh no your standards are too high” and “oh you cant blame the developers for producing a shitty game”, because yeah, I can.
The things you mentioned are surely a side effect, but the main motivation behind the OSWs is that the developers would have trouble programming everything if there are constantly players on the servers.
They said so themselves once in the forums.
A second reason is that they currently don’t have the moderation capabilities to moderate the game 24/7.
@LemonDrop
It’s not a crappy game, most things work fine already and the developers progress with it quickly.
If your high standards for a game can’t cope with some bugs in a game that is still developed and not yet finished, then you can’t blame the developers for that.
Development teams are different from the moderation teams, so I’m afraid LemonDrop is probably right.
It’s brilliant, though: let it open 24/7, people will quickly get bored of it and it’s no longer news, it’s no longer a big deal.
But open the servers every so often, and every time you do, people will flood in, and you’ll make news again and again and again and again instead of only once.
Plus, getting people talking about it, and seeing it play, helps motivate the developers.
Plus again, players learn to appreciate every feature as it gets added, instead of being overwhelmed with everything all at once.
So, eh.
More like because people would realize how crappy of a game it was and stop playing
It’s not marketing, they just can’t let the servers be open all the time, because that would slow down the development process.
It’s brilliant marketing, though.
You should cut back on the sarcasm, by the way. It’s a game in development, bugs are to expect.
If you don’t like that, you shouldn’t play game that isn’t finished yet.
