It became popular because we saw a Stormtrooper NOT being a total loser. He saw a dude with a lightsaber, tosses his stuff away and goes full-on melee combat with a stun baton against him. It’s the most badass thing a stormtrooper has ever done in any of the movies.
Officially it is because that TR-8R and Finn were part of the same storm trooper group, they were also the closest on the team.

That would be actually clever and potentially humorous, nowhere near forced randumb enough.
It’s a scene from “The Force Awakens” that wasn’t that funny, but is still being shoved down everyone’s throats, being used to reference Trixie’s disinterest in wheels.
