@adatron
Orichalcum is one colloquial term used to refer to a fictional magically-infused form of gold, or gold alloy, and many depictions of such substances also involve references to the sun and sunlight. In Exalted, for just one example, orichalcum itself is made from gold saturated in sunlight and other such nonsense.

So Celestia’s use of gold for her regalia is not just a nice color palette, it’s also a play on folklore and fantasy fiction.

“Au”, the symbol for gold is short for “aurum”. Often said to mean “shining dawn”, related to the Latin word “aurora”. Appropriate character selection, I’d say. Plus her normal regalia looks like it is made of gold.

I think helium would be more suitable for Celestia, but still a cute picture :)

It’s all fine and dandy until someone solders an aluminum contact on.

Gold forms a couple of compounds that I find… let’s just say interesting. Cesium can react with gold to form cesium auride, which is technically a salt and not really an alloy. The electronegativity of gold is actually slightly lower than that of iodine. Also, gold can form a complex with xenon.

Dullahans are deathly scared of gold.

Despite this, gold connectors are common in smartphones and other places where failure would be catastrophic, like aeroplane fly-by-wire systems. It also reflects IR radiation effectively, which led to its use as coating for the James Webb space telescope’s mirrors; some ponies use it as medicine too, radiotherapy or otherwise. Nanoparticles of gold can look completely different from bulk gold - some jewellers exploit this to sell less gold for more money…
