I didn’t really find Spike useful in the second movie until the ending as well. Too much hero worship.

I actually only thought Spike was useful somewhat in the first and then pretty useful in the second. IMO, in FG, he was completely useless up until the ending.

The writing regarding Spike was actually quite stellar in the first and third movies. Meghan got stuck with an ugly concept and made something out of it that pleased more people than one would’ve believed possible.

Cute? Yes. He is cute. But that and trying to sell toys doesn’t excuse poor writing. It’s already show that every other species is canonically human. Why would dragons be any different?

I’m sure donkeys, sirens and Diamond Dogs age differently from ponies as well, yet they’re all human.

They made him a dog because some Hasbro executive thought it would be a cute idea that’d sell toys.

She would have because he’s not a child, Spike is almost 5 years younger than Twilight and the only reason they made him a dog is because he’s not a pony and dragons age differently than ponies, so they made him a dog because dogs age differently than humans.
 
Another reason they made him a dog could also be that anything with hooves that goes through the mirror will get hands and feet in the human world, Spike already had those as a dragon so instead he became a creature that doesn’t have any opposable thumbs.

I would have preferred human spike in the movies as well. Though i suppose it’s easier to prove you’re from another world with a talking dog then with a talking child.

Twilight would have had a lot of difficulty fitting a small child into her backpack.

Don’t mean to burst anyone’s bubble, but man, I still would’ve much preferred human Spike.
