Princess of Science
There is a deep connection between my OC Parcly Taxel and platinum; not only do the two share initials, Parcly’s crown and horn ring are made of platinum and the etymology of the element (little silver) is a reference to her mentor Luna (traditionally associated with silver).

Skip to the real uses though. Platinum is mostly used as adsorption material in catalytic converters, where carbon/nitrogen oxides and hydrocarbons are bound and made into the less harmful carbon dioxide and water vapour. It also tends to be the most effective and versatile metal for catalysts in organic chemistry, though the steep price (1 litre is around a million US dollars) has stirred the development of ruthenium and biomimetic equivalents.

As I’ve mentioned on iridium, the combination of the two metals defines the kilogram, but in general platinum is the answer to “I need a completely inert metal!” Pans in calorimeters and electrodes for determining standard electrode potentials both come in platinum.
