Still that’s not a reference that is very recognisable, I think it says a lot that there’s so few parts of the prequels that has been embedded in peoples minds, besides the bits people take the piss out of. (I hate sand, the rascist CG rasta frog, noooooooooooo ect). That’s how you can tell that they don’t have the magic the originals did. season 2 ended with a parody of the ending of a new hope, season 6 won’t end with a parody of the fucking trade route taxation disputes from phantom menace.
Perhaps they’re trying to bring balance to the references, not destroy them?
Do the prequels ever get referenced in pop culture unless they’re mocking it or parodying Darth Mauls duel lightsaber?

I didn’t even notice the reference at first, because I never saw the original Star Wars trilogy.
If someone who doesn’t know the reference can read it and it still makes sense and feels natural, that’s how you know it isn’t forced.
Or they could have not had thsi contrivance happen and instead be trying to use cadance and twilight as a threat against Celestia and Luna, the two beings who are most likely to destroy them now. Petrify them and threaten to scatter them across equestria and such.
Then again these guys care so little about adventure arcs it never occurred to them that sombra could not just petrify two beings who are MIORE POWERFUL THAN HE IS. They are tooooooo lazy to think of anything else.
Yes i hate this arc with a fiery passion. Mainly cause they are royally fucking up the payoff of sombra’s backstory with it ><
Seriously there are dozenso f more intersting ways this could ahve gone. The umbrum could ahve fended off celestia and luna, showing the regal sisters are powerful. but the umbrum have the advantage there. ANYTHING at all.
What is msot idsappointing is that the writer of this one is someone who does adventure stories for idw, some kind of turn it on its head princess story…… Yet they go for such a contrived plot. Fuck whoever wrote this ><
Better than if we get a Near Villain Victory if Sombra does petrify Cadence and Twilight in front of the Crystal Ponies to show he’s removed the one thorn in his and the Umbrum’s plans for Equestria, the Royal Family, from stopping them.
Besides, the main reason for my fear, is not just Twilight suffering being turned to stone again like with what happened with the cockatrice when she was a unicorn, but as for Cadence, it has to do with this artist’s work:

So their supposed “escape”, the railroad sabotage, and Cadance’s “confession” are all a trick to make the Umbrum think the rest of the mane 6 are very far away?
If that’s true, that’s a pretty clever plan on their part.
But before Twilight, Cadence, and Shining Armor were captured, Twilight could have formulated a plan with the rest of the Mane Six, then allowed herself to be caught so she could put her part of the plan with luring the Umbrum out to the Crystal Heart dais into action.
The rest of the Mane Six are just waiting to do like before and use their bonds of friendship with Twilight to rescue her and Cadence, then turn the tables on the Umbrum while they’re still recoiling from being duped.
But this appears to be within days, as stoning-up the princesses only makes sense a few days after their takeover, not months out.
Nah to the Umbrums credit they don’t feel like excuses light the moon creatures. People actually still acknowledge Sombra as a monster regardless unlike what they did with Luna.
