I remember hearing about that in ’Nam. The officers even asked to not be saluted, lest the snipers see who everyone was saluting.

Makes me think of, I think in the first Pirates of the Caribbean movie, when
JackCaptain Jack Sparrow was coming in to the harbor, he saluted the dead pirates on his way in.Dunno how unheard of that might or might not be, though. Probably depends quite a bit on the outfit and historic period?
But if it isn’t then I default back to times of war in which we would not wear any rank insignias at all to keep from getting shot. Then again you also wouldn’t salute in a combat zone.
But this is all theory, it’s also a children’s show where the creators probably zero to little military background.
I thought that was a button, like how there’s brown ones on either side of maud and pinkie’s collars.

Actually, I noticed that all the pegasus ponies were wearing blue uniforms. My thinking is that, in this universe, Rainbow Dash became a Wonderbolt (possibly before the war, possibly during), and then during the war, the Wonderbolts became more of an army, which makes sense since they seem to have military routes.
I actually think it’d be better as a warhammer 40k type thing.
We need some Umbra in the Sombra ranks to fill in for demons.

Unfortunately, this scene is quite ambiguous even though so many people have come to love it!
She is obviously of high rank here, just like BP#F283 said. Besides, it is demonstrated clearly that she is MUCH more effective than most of the other soldiers - regardless of the side. Her outstanding fighting qualities seems to remain no matter what time line she is currently into! Any other pegasus (or unicorn, or Earth pony, or even Alicorn) wouldn’t stand a single chance in fight with her!
But she’s being saluted; that implies rank over maud and pinkie.
