In that case, the blog theme seems to be coded in such a way that it shows you the URL at the bottom of the screen when you hover over the image, but still enforces tumblr’s default behavior of opening the 1280px version in a pop-up if you click on it.  
As an easy way to bypass this, you can use the middle mouse button or Right-Click -> Open Link to get there  
(I always use middle-mouse to open links, so I never even noticed this issue)

It’s called a “click-through link”, you click the image itself and rather than giving you a tumblr image capped at 1280px (tumblr_#######_1280.jpg), it links to the actual full-size version in my dropbox, where all my full-size versions are stored.

I’m pretty sure he does it on purpose, I’ve seen others do similar things, like linking to imgur, deviantart, or their main blog (for whatever reason)
