Saw this on Pbooru and it made me think of that scene where Tantibus merges into Luna (notice this was made back in 2012)

That wasn’t nightmare moon
Only because of technicality. Otherwise, how would you explain why Nightmare Rarity talks like if she fought the Mane 6 before? I call the spirit that takes over Luna “Nightmare Moon” because there’s not really an official name for that spirit.

It’s not contradicted by anything on the show. And seeing it’s not contradicted by anything on the show…
 
Not to mention, Hasbro goes by “if it’s happened, it’s canon” with this installment of the franchise. Which makes the comics just as canon as the chapter books.

Okay, let’s see.
 
• It fits in perfectly with what Lauren Faust said about how Luna became Nightmare Moon.  
• It explains why Luna would consider using the dark magic mentioned by Lauren Faust.  
• It’s supported by what happens in the Nightmare Moon flashback scene in Princess Twilight Sparkle.  
• And it makes Luna far less omnicidal than she would be under the now non-canon assumption that she and Nightmare Moon are the same being.
 
How that doesn’t make sense is beyond me.
