It wasn’t as if the Queen of the Night didn’t have her moments of peace and tranquility. It was in moments like these that Rarity took solace, and even a touch of pride, in her role as the personal hoofmaiden of Nightmare Moon. At the very least, it meant she was being a reasonable pony, rather than the overbearing ruler she was accustomed to being, demanding tapestry-changing every twenty-four hours.
Seeing the smile of a pony at peace was good enough for Rarity. She took her featherduster and stowed it away in her mane, redirecting herself to tackle another of the castle’s many rooms, when she heard a sigh emanate from the ebony being seated upon the pillows. She paused in her step, ear perked for a word to come from her mistress.
“… Mmm. Rarity. This tea dost do much to calm the mind. From whence had you acquired it?”
She bowed graciously. “It is in fact, a mixture derived by my own grandmother. It has been passed down in generations in my family, and it has always served me well, in calming my nerves. I am glad to see it does much the same for you, my Mistress.”
The alicorn nodded, her ethereal mane flowing freely, as she lifted the cup to take another sip. “Thou art a miracle worker in thine own right, Rarity… I was right to make you my personal servant.” She opened her eyes, slitted pupils devoid of malice for once in her long life. “I do not forget deeds such as this. When you are done with your duties, inform the chefs, that I hath allowed thee full reign of the kitchen. One wonders what other skills thou might have in hiding.” The latter half of the command had been said in a suspicious tone, but the white unicorn found herself shocked, as the night mare proceeded to toss her a wink.
As elated as she felt, she composed herself, and bowed once more. “Thou are most gracious indeed, my Mistress. I will endeavor not to let you down.”
“As well that you should.” came the reply, the queen settling into her cushions once again, returning to her tea. “You may go.”
The maid bowed once more, and finally made her exit, closing the doors with a mere click. It was only once she was gone, that Nightmare Moon again opened her eyes, a genuine smile upon her face.
“Thank you, for giving me a chance… Rarity.”
It’s probably why Rarity and Rainbow Dash are hardasses, you have to develop a thick skin to live with that kind of thing.

I agree with that. I love the aesthetic, actually. Except for Rainbow’s buzzcut… Shivers
It does make you wonder how she handled the Crystal Empire and Changelings, though.

No, an assassination attempt is a pretty big deal. I have no question whatsoever that Nightmare Moon would have any attempted assassins - at the very least, imprisoned forever. Realistically, probably at least executed. Given she’s Nightmare Moon, probably publicly executed and left to hang for at least a few days to make the message rather clear.
That’s how monarchies are… Assassination is a pretty darn big no-no.

Well, I like to imagine that in the universe, apart from it being night all the time, and celestia being sent to the moon, Equestia is still pretty much the same. Hell, in some cases, it might even be better then the normal one.
Luna became Nightmare Moon because she was angry that no one liked her moon, so after she made it eternal night, and found out that ponies do like her moon, she stopped being evil , and is pretty much a rather chill princess.
I like to imagine that she never wanted to hurt other ponies, just wanted them to like her moon. So instead of forcing them to slavery or anything, she lets them get on with their lives, and would actually make sure to make Equestria better when it has eternal night. Like plant life, im sure she has a spell of two to make sure it still works in eternal night.
And who knows, maybe some time in the future, she will decide to let celestia back.
Plus, im sure she got rid of Chrysalis and Sombra, so the Changeling invasion and the Crystal war never happened.
Nightmare worries to much that if she tells stuff like this to other ponies, they might ignore her, but she is happy to know that no matter how much she goes on and on, or how much she repates herself, she can always be happy to know that her personal maid Rarity is more then happy to listen to her problems, and help give her advice on them.
In that world she apparently handled sombrero, it is the same time as the crystal war after all.
Except for when Nightmare Moon orders to have the tapestries changed, which, judging by Rarity’s annoyed reaction, seems to be very often.
I’d really like to have seen more of a Nightmare Moon who got what she wanted. Would she see that without the sun the world would die and decide “no, this isn’t what I wanted?” Or seeing others fear her rather than appreciate her night, decide the same? Would she mellow out over time, and after a while, consider changing some things? Of course, totally putting things back as they were wouldn’t be something she’d be up for; once Tia’s back on the throne we’re back to the old status quo but with Nightmare Moon being hated rather than merely second banana.
Also, when Sombra did return, she would want to stop him as much as in the main timeline. Give it a few years and it and the Crystal War timeline might look exactly the same.
(Who knows, they might love her after that. This is when she might think “I might’ve been a bit hasty… I could let Tia out now… but then it’ll go back to the way it was and they’ll love her again and forget what I did for them…”)
And of course, she’d discuss all this over tea with her number one lady-in-waiting.
I do wonder if the guards made an actual attempt to fight Nightmare Moon after Celestia was banished. That would be amusing to watch.
Except when a pony wishes it were daytime again. Then it’s torture-chamber time.
Like, she’s exacty the same as Celestia in every way, but she just randomly bursts into manic laughter.

Well if we’re getting into headcannon territory, allow me to endulge in a bit of my own; this is probably wrong in every respect, but I like to think that the only legitamately evil thing she did was banish celestia, then, after that, she’s just kinda chilling out, and life goes on pretty much exactly the same, just… y’know… without the sun..
I dunno, for some reason that thought amuses me… like Twilight shows up, and Nightmare Moons’ just like, “hey, sup?” and that’s it…
TLDR; Nightmare moons’ actually super chill, or whatever.

I vastly prefer the headcanon that Rarity is just fine and pleased with her role as butler / majordomo.

Well To protect Ponykind, some ponies must be sacrificed. To ensure their future, some freedoms must be surrendered. Nightmare Moon will ensure ponykind’s continued existence. Ponies are so like foals. She must save them from themselves.
Yeah, but the ponies are probably all being oppressed in some way. And, a world without sun would still be a downer, even if the environment could be maintained.
But, yeah, not so bad in comparison.

By comparison Nightmare Moons timeline seemed kinda nice.
