Yet another case of “fandom” messing up the image of the actual content. That’s fanon depictions of the characters that were mostly used for jokes or by people that didn’t know any better, and it spread to those who really, really did not know any better.
How so? Explain your position in detail, with examples. Personally I’ve found that it tends to quite nicely subvert many cliches common to japanese entertainment; most problems lie in the fanwork rather than the actual canon material.
