I doubt that she was directly referring to the character from the novel, since 1) Svengallop looks nothing like him and aside from the basic setup they barely have anything in common personality-wise, and 2) Trilby was one of the most popular novel in the world 150 years ago, but hardly anyone reads it today. It’s not even in print in most English-speaking countries. It’s actually not considered a very good book so most literature scholars ignore it. It was the 50 Shades of its time: popular because it was “shocking,” but otherwise crap.

As a famous literary misanthrope once observed, “The problem with racism is that it prevents you from despising [insert ethnic group here] on an individual basis.”

Svengallop looks alot like Knight Shade.

Le Happy Merchant is a antisemitic cartoon published circa 1990s by A.Wyatt Mann aka Nick Bougas who is suspected by some to not be a real racist but merely a provocateur that “did it for the lulz” (since the guy apparently worked before on satiric publications and look like an hipster rather than a skinhead)
