General Tag Discussion

Should we have some sort of species tag for Catrina and Capper like “cat person”? Does their species have an official name or a preexisting fanon one? I’ve noticed people tagging “cat” for Capper, but this seems inappropriate given that there are actual non-anthropomorphic cats in Equestria. Could we remove “cat” from the Capper images that don’t contain non-anthropomorphic cats since he’s clearly different from characters like Opalescence which is more appropriate for the tag with the same thing applying to Catrina?

I’m sorry, after a bit of research he apparently wasn’t actually fired though a lot of fans were calling for it after the SJW OC incident. Personally I think he should have gotten fired for slapping bronies, the target audience for the comics, in the face like that. In any case, personally, I would think he should possibly be discounted on word of god matters, unless it actually appears in the show or comics, since he clearly has issues with the fandom.

Yeah, when you put it like that, I’ll forgot about the mentions and just wait and see if said character does show up again in the comics with an actual name, if that happens, or if the show actually does show how Trixie’s parents are, which I hope it does in the next season.

Four species from the movie will be included in the next expansion of the Tails of Equestria RPG as new playable non-pony races. To quote the relevant part of the description:
 

 
So Capper indeed seems to be a Cat.
 
Not sure how high this ranks in the canon hierarchy, probably below comic level, but it is an officially licensed product and the only source for those races’ names that I’m aware of.
 
I propose we create a new “Cat (race)” or alternatively “Catfolk” (to match Lizardfolk) tag and use that for Capper.
 
We also should create a “Parrot (race)” or “Parrotfolk” tag for Captain Celaeno and her crew, because right now they only get tagged as “bird” (if at all).  
Same with a new “Lizardfolk” tag and (currently) “lizard”.

They’re from Abyssynia, so I’ve been calling them Abyssynians.

Right, totally forgot about the prequel comics. I guess we could also do that, though I’m not a big fan of that name.  
I know it was named after a cat breed, but apart from Abyssinia being an old name for the Ethiopian Empire and the Abyssinians being an actual ethnic group in that region, it always makes me think of some Lovecraftian eldritch abomination from the Abyss…  
Plus, we don’t know if there are any more cat countries and if that actually was their country of origin.

I love how used a tag I created years back has become.

If there’s tags for males doing it, there is literally no reason there shouldn’t be a female equivalent?

I’m asking this here because I can’t find the actual information anywhere and I can’t think of where else to ask this: what does the “image macro” tag stand for, and why is it hidden on the default filter? I’ve had trouble seeing a common trend between images that get that tag, and as a result of that I also haven’t really been able to see why they’re hidden on the default.

Usually means images with a caption in impact font, with the black border…the classic sort of meme. To be honest, I don’t think they should be in the default filter, other than they detract somewhat from the artistic side of the site.

Just to further state my opinion on the matter (since this wasn’t really answering his question): I think it is a detriment not just to the site but to the fandom in general that this tag is in the default filter.
 
Sure, I want to promote artistic integrity and creativity in the fandom, so I understand why some forms of memes would make sense to be filtered so they didn’t clutter the site for new users, but I really do think memes like these inspire creativity - not just because it might inspire an artist to draw a silly picture based on it, but also because so-called “not art” memes are a valid means of creativity themselves.
 
The joy of image macros is that it’s easy to produce a high-quality end result for minimal effort - decent font quality and size, good source image, and a witty caption, and that’s it. There are even generators available to make it even easier. Compared with the other tags the default filter hides, this is one form of meme that really seems unnecessarily lumped-in with things like mspaint, greentext, etc.
 
Either we should have a global filter that offers a default view that embraces creative use of memes, or we need to sort out the attitude of the current default. Some of the things it’s hiding seem poorly motivated.

Basically what @WingbeatPony said. Images where someone just slaps some text onto it for a joke or other meme.

Well the default filter does say it “hides ‘not art’ content.” So I guess them just being text added onto an existing image would count.

With that in mind, I have a follow-up question. Why does this picture count as an image macro?
 

 
If the definition is that it’s screenshot or other image with some text slapped on, I don’t see why this one is tagged as such – at the very least, I don’t seen any text.

Image macros on other non-pony sites are what got me interested in this crazy train ride.

Yeah, and I completely agree with both of these statements. The thing that makes it difficult isn’t deciding how subjective it is - declaring image macros as potentially having merit/quality is just as subjective as saying they are in the spirit of the site/our face to the world - it’s weighing the importance of those two, which is a subjectivity all its own on top of that.
 
That’s why I think discussion on the matter should get moved to a more appropriate forum. I’m gonna sleep on this and go find somewhere to continue talking about the default filter.
