I think that it is translating Pony style onto a humanoid body. The movie maybe more into references from the Show, such as Vinyl Scratch, The picture of the human friends as kids, and Chicken Dance Scootaloo.
As someone who has occasionally visits danbooru and gelbooru, I can confirm this fact.

Ever notice that ponies are double jointed and have ungodly short torsos? Or how everyone in The Simpsons has yellow skin, no chins and four digits on each limb? Just let it grow on you and you might enjoy it.
TO be fair, only Twilight and Sunset look good as humans. The other five are one inch away of reaching the uncanny valley.
That’s why I prefer off-style fanart. The design indeed kinda grows on you (save Rainbow in a skirt and everybody having a skin condition) but dos stick figures…
