Under certain situations* i.e. any time at all, also the writers could always show us that there are more to* these characters than just being big nasty villains trying to take over or destroy Equestria all the time.
Why do you insist on having villains killed off? Even if their death was indirectly caused, the protagonists aren’t actively trying to hurt anyone (Twilight’s fight with Tirek was an exception), also has it ever crossed your mind that MAYBE killing the villain isn’t the wisest thing to do in certain situation. Maybe the writers could show us that there is more of these characters than we thought before, whether they are redeemable or not. Perhaps you shouldn’t assume that every villain is made of pure evil and deserving of nothing but death and suffering,
who says they have to kill them directly? Sombra wasn’t a direct act.
Problem I have with the kill them off argument is, it doesn’t hold water from both the narrative standpoint nor a fandom standpoint.
Like, character here because they were redeemed.
Luna, Discord, Sunset Shimmer, Trixie. All of whom became highly popular.
Characters who weren’t redeemed and instead got the killed off/banished/never seen again ending/never becomes redeemed at all.
Queen Chrysalis, King Sombra, The Sirens, Lightning Dust, Diamond Tiara and Silver Spoon, Gilda, etc, etc.
And what is the most popular story for most of these chars or themes for pics and such? Them getting redeemed or appearing more so we can find out more about them, usually to find out something that paints their actions in moral greys rather than black and white.
The math just doesn’t add up for supporting the killing off of characters. And if that doesn’t, the narrative themes of Friendship is Magic making killing characters almost an anti-thesis of the story, tracing all the way back to the first episode where the main villain is redeemed, and not killed.
That’s a shame.
The 2nd movie wasn’t bad. I actually watched it a second time at some point.
