Speaking of, I’m totally using Gloriosa in one of my fics. Also, it seems gloriosa on its own is a genus of plants, so it serves a double use as both a bug and flower name.

I think you might be right. The beetles you refer to only look the way they do because of nanoscopic structures sprinkled across their shells that are wide enough to allow certain wavelengths of light in, similar to some butterfly wings, but only specific ones, which results in specific colors reflecting while others are absorbed (or at least, that’s my layman understanding). Not every structure is exactly perfectly the right size, nor does the light hit at the same angles everywhere, so slight variations in the wavelengths and amplitude create a magnificent gleam effect.

Replicating this beautiful effect in animation would be… difficult, to say the least. So they didn’t even bother, resulting in the ugly changelings we got.

Edit: Here’s the actual explanation for the green beetle’s brilliant gleam.

The exoskeleton of the brilliant green beetle (Chrysina gloriosa, or Plusiotis gloriosa) selectively reflects left circularly polarized light, or light whose electric field, from the perspective of the observer, has a left-hand corkscrew structure along the direction it is moving.
The reflecting structures on the beetle’s shell consist predominately of three different polygonal shapes — mostly hexagons, though there are some pentagons and heptagons.

The color is created by the sizes of the structures, but the gleams are created by that.

He needs to be shinier. I know that sounds even more OC-cringe-inducing, but if neo-changelings are modeled after scarabs, they should look more “reflective”. Those colors would look a lot better if they were metallic like you’d see on a sportscar.

Bleh, I am doing my best to like his new form, but I swear most of the background changelings got it better than he does, that torso clashes HARD with his design x.x

You’re not understanding. Even the animals with crazy colors look good to me. They seem natural. Real. And that’s because they are real. Even the obviously ridiculous colors in this show almost always look aesthetically pleasing… until it comes to stuff like rainbow power and this. It’s like the artists gave up and decided to contrast colors and use horrid gradient mixing (like his chest) instead of making them look pleasing.

Some people enjoy this type of thing, for some reason, so I guess they are appealing to them? But to me it just looks unprofessional.

Yeah but but those animals usually can convey luminosity and how the the lighting actually conveys the texture in their design. This is probably why fanart of them will be vastly superior to their current look.

That’s what I think too.

Many animals have colors that are out of this world, especially beetles. I just feel the more colorful and striking they are, the more imposing he looks, while still retaining a majestic and imo nature look. Plus almost every mlp character has some very crazy colors.
