Maybe this is just me, but keeping a color you don’t like just because everyone else is that color when you could easily change it with little more than a thought seems much more disingenuous than simply changing your color scheme to better suit you personally.
I think he only wants to be one or the other but he doesn’t want to choose.
The feelings forum mentor indeed told him that he could be whatever color he wanted, but he said that it would feel disingenuous.
With more love than they ever had before, I don’t see how that’s possible.
Maybe you have a ‘standard’ form and maintaining another takes work. You couldn’t do it 24/7.
Either they can’t, or they have it in their heads that even changing that little bit is lying.
You get points for that.
I also saw it as a poke at the whole “but they are just so colorful and it doesn’t seem right” folks.
