So after yesterday’s Voting Rights Act debacle, the Supreme Court decided to strike down DOMA and refuse to rule on Prop 8 in California. Now Trixie wished she never kicked Twilight Sparkle out of Ponyville.

Because when a person is already inclined to be hateful and prejudiced, they will look for anything that validates their world view. and you can find many passages on the Bible/Qurʾan/anywhere else that’ll do this. The opposite also holds true, since you can also find many passages with good messages in any of those books.

The only thing Christians need to take from the old testament is the ten commandments. Yes, being gay is a sin. However, that does not mean you’re going to hell. Being gay doesn’t even matter, cause the thing is, according to christianity, all humans are sinners. That’s because we always make mistakes, no human is perfect. That’s why whenever the church or Christians attack gay people, it really pisses me off, because they are being hypocritical. They clearly have zero understanding of the basic principles of their own religion.

You’ll find most Christians aren’t very good at following the teachings of jesus, nor do they follow his example. A good amount condemns gay people because they view it as a sin, but if they actually paid attention to the bible then they would know that they are sinners too. According to Christianity, we’re all sinners, so it really pisses me off when my fellow Christians condemn someone because they are a “sinner”, fucking hypocrites.

I’m frankly not sure what exactly it is that makes people think the Bible tells them to hate and condemn people, as opposed to “judge not, that ye be not judged” and “love thy neighbor as thyself”. One might assume that it’s mostly old people who are stuck in their ways with the learning of past generations, but my experience tends to counterindicate that idea. I go to church with a lot of old people, and I don’t think I’ve ever heard any of them say anything bad about anyone. I don’t think I’d even call them good people, they just don’t really care about homosexuality.

That and I’m pretty sure the Bible says “Sinning is bad, don’t do it” and not “You should Enforce the Bible like Law”.
Also ironically, God would be pro-gay marriage, as he was all for letting people sin, and Lucifer was the one for forcing people to be non-sinners.

I’m a bit confused about the whole church vs. gay marriage issue. I read the Bible and all I found in the New Testament (which is the only part that’s supposed to matter to Christians) is that Paul said gay sex is icky. Putting aside the question of whether this constitutes a sin, wouldn’t the better route be… requiring gays to marry? I mean, that’s when the sex usually ends…

@UnicronX
If god is willing to smite a country because it decided to give equal rights to gays then I’m sorry (I’m really not though), but your god is an evil fuck-bag who’s unworthy of worship.

They are and don’t act like that idea thought up by the confederacy isn’t.
America would be a far better country if we acted like a country and not a union of states.

Gay Marriage should not be aloud for the state to decide, because there is no valid reason other then “DEM GAYS OFFEND MAH RELIGION!” as to why it shouldn’t be aloud, just bigoted Christians trying to scare-monger and rally people into oppressing gays.

Gun safety also becomes far safer when you can’t simply go to one state where’ their gun laws are ultra-lax and buy a concealed gun there and go back home and rob someone there.

So pray tell, what reason other then chest thumping about “your state” should the State be able to decide things rather then the Federal government?
If’ it’s moral in one state, it should be moral in another.

There was no debacle with the Voting Rights Act. All states are now under the same set of rules, instead of singling a few out for something that happened decades ago. No rights have been lost.

Well… in most cases i would agree with you. In this though, not so much.
In most cases i see no reason to go again the majority decision, because the role of the government should remain to govern for the people as the people would wish to be governed.

Yet democracy must never ever forget and indeed always be tempered by this simple knowledge. The majority opinion is not automatically the right opinon.

There was a time where the majority of people would have voted against freeing black slaves or allowing mixed colours to marry. The democratic thing to do would have been at the same time the morally abhorrent thing to do.

Another example is when things like action on climate change comes down to votes. Just because the majority doesnt think climate change is happening or should be prepared for doesnt mean we should listen to them, because those who actually understand the subject properly should be the people we are listening to. Not the average Joe without a highschool education.

In these situations it must be remembered that a government has to be a leader as well as a servant of the people. Because as much as i wish otherwise, our species is still very much composed of children.
DasHiveMind

Personally I think “state rights” and “state laws” are utter bullshit and America should start acting like a actually country, rather then a slightly more united Europe.

Especially considering considering how most of the time “state rights” devolve into Republicans trying to push in more hate-laws.

Regardless of my political stance on the subject, I utterly detest the act of a federal government overruling voters of a state.
