I very much like the queen goddess sisters, and the cinematic drama of this huge event.
I couldn’t let it stay un-gif’d for as long as it was!
I will certainly get back to G1 sooner than later though, I’m sure. :)
I’m guessing it basically was just that everyone neglected her, the moon and the night until she finally snapped. She probably did give out plenty of warning signs, but nobody cared. There probably wasn’t any night life to speak of. She might have been sitting mostly alone, every night. For who knows how long. Not much love in the air back then. Bastards didn’t know how good princess they lost.
On the other hand, Celestia may have barely ever paid attention to her sister for awhile, either. The backstory of what led up to this and how the sisters interacted with each other back then is a mystery still.
Maybe the other ponies should have hugged her too. There might still have been a chance to prevent her from going all nightmare-y.
What happened to Luna before this point of no return is something left in the air. She could have received plentiful hugs from Celestia and still given in to jealousy, for all we know.

Then she should have been hugged earlier. Much earlier. Did Woona receive enough hugs? I don’t think so.
But I would have walked up there and hugged her.
Unfortunately it seems implied things had been building up way too much by that point, but who knows… that still might’ve made the difference.
