In this case… no thestrals do not have to mean skeletal horses with reptilian features and bat wings. Nor does one have to say the Harry Potter definition is the only correct definition.
Though when it comes to the last two points they do apply. I myself have never felt bat ponies were an appropriate name since their features were more reptilian or draconic given the eyes and frilled ridge on their head.
Firstly, they have reptilian hide, white eyes and skeletal body. I wouldn’t want to see a batpony suffering from hunger, having blind eyes and some kind of mutation.
So let’s not call them thestrals, okay?
Actually, they weren’t invented by the HP universe, they’ve existed in mythology for a loooong time as horses with bat wings.
