Yes. I agree.
Bottom line, tropes are tools.
I give her a pass for being a terrifyingly effective one mare army because of those things I mentioned. My edgelord alarms really would be ringing if she was just mhahaha’ing and sounded like the voice actress considered volume = authority, while still being able to thrash the whole mane six and guys three times her size.

Plus, some of her scenes here depict that she’s quite a capable fighter. Not to mention she’s obviously gonna play a big role in the movie anyways. Take note of that, Captain Phasma!
And if the writers were unable to use cool ideas because a hundred bad fanfics have run that idea into the ground, we would all be a lot lesser for it.
…plus have you read some of the reactions to her? She got plenty of mocking for being the illegitimate daughter of Sombra and Doughnut Steel, and still does. That has died down for the most part for the simple reason that her dialogue is cool, she’s got clear personality and a fantastic voice actress.
Well, you got the “At least one character” right? It’s there- or was.
And look how much the fandom loves him.
That was 4 years ago and He’s a dark lord, he’s suppose to edgy. Plus he’s really really dead.
No, but I answered your question didn’t I? And what do you know, she’s a basically black and red character with a rather notable height, who is scarred, and has a marauding group of thugs she commands.
That’s basically something the fandom would roast any other day of the week. Most of those traits have been seen, and browbeaten, by us as a fandom collectively.
Except, now that we have an official character in this vein it’s original, alright and never been done before, engaging and cool. Frankly, I just think the hype for the film is clouding folks’ judgement of her.
@Mr grump
We have Sombra.
It’s only trite and cliched to us because we’ve been immersed in tha fandom for years.
The kids who see the movie are gonna think she’s awesome, and isn’t that what it’s all about?
Besides, we should have at least one canon edgelord.
So, because bad OC happen to have those traits, that means that no character is allowed to have them or they will automatically be bad no matter how well written they are?
I mean, aside from the fact that a broken horn is a staple of bad “Was once in THE WAAARRRRRRR” pony-creator OCs everywhere..?
Nothing really.
What, in a meta sense, is wrong with a broken horn?
you’ve gotta be fucking kidding me
I hate that as much as you. I love female fighters, and I also love to see my heroes struggle, take licks, get blooded up. I like to see that battles have consequences. Yet showing women getting hurt still makes too many people uncomfortable it seems, so we’re either left with no female combatants at all, or female combatants that never seem too badly challenged.
MLP is better than most. Tirek was allowed to smack Twilight around, and Daring Do clearly came out of her fight with Caballeron’s henchmen with a few bruises. Given all the slapstick they suffer, the show has nicely established that these girls can take a hit, and don’t need to be wrapped in cotton wool.
I don’t know, I see plenty of people Joking about Tempest in much the same way they ripped on shadow lock And most of it was pretty light hearted.

While at the same time promoting the idea that these weak innocent girls are just as capable as any man and can fulfill the same exact roles just as well or better. We accept that, yet we are still more sympathetic to them in every situation that involves a man and a woman, when the woman is on the losing side. But once things are going ok, its a totally natural thing because we’re expected to see them equally. If they’re losing, “protect them they’re weaker after all!” But before that, “don’t underestimate them, that’s sexist because we’re all equals.”
I know I’m walking into a minefield just for saying this and yet, ugh.
It just annoys me how we’re supposed to ignore this or risk displeasing today’s social overlords.

Actually, it’s straight out the opposite. We don’t like seeing women getting beaten up, punished or killed, because society programs us to see them as weak innocents, who need to be protected. It makes the other party look less sympathetic, because they’re doing this to a girl.
Equality is just as much of a joke as it was before, its just on the opposite direction now.
Its just that most people either don’t care or don’t notice until it affects them personally in some way.
Just look at how Tempest Shadow is received compared to, say, Shadowlock back then. The basic design is almost the same, yet people immediately shat on him before they even knew anything about him. And most people will be very effective at making up excuses as for why its different, and totally not because one has a vagina and the other doesn’t.

I already know your comment was irrelevant.
Is it really necessary to ignore everything I said just due to misunderstanding one part of what you said?
