it’s a synthesizer. you can use it for everything.
some models come with a fixed set of tones, some record whatever you feed into them, distort the samples and let you program a sequence with it.
check out reggie watts improvising a song live on stage with such a gadget:

Looks like I’ve learnt something new today. Great find on that.
Usually what kind of songs are they used for?
You don’t play it like a normal instrument - you program a sequence of notes on the fly, then add other sequences to it.
Some models have a keyboard, some are just buttons and knobs. or run on an ipad.
Some programming concepts are … weird. But hey, knock yourself out: http://www.earslap.com/page/otomata.html
Because keytar is a slang term that is slightly misleading, it’s just a keyboard that can be slung over the shoulder, and has a few features similar to a guitar.
How are they held then? Also, if doesn’t look guitar like, then why is it still called a keytar?
Not all keytar’s look like that
But it’s more than likely one of these
I don’t think it’s quite guitar shaped enough to count as a keytar…
Possibly a Keytar, or a sythn with a shoulder strap.
Wow, beautiful.
