After his future caretaker thanked him for being so nice to her despite the two of them having only just met (as far as she knew), Twilight asked Spike to accompany her back to her house. “Just in case those fillies show up again.” she added.
Spike agreed, and followed the unicorn filly along an all too familiar route into Canterlot’s residential district. All the while though, there was something he felt he was forgetting and it silently frustrated him as per what it exactly was.
“Here we are! Come on in, there’s somepony I want you to meet.” Spike walked in through the door, as Twilight made her way to the kitchen. “Shiny, this is the boy that cheered me up. Spike, this is my BBBFF, Shining Armor.”
Spike was now panicking internally, and was silently cursing himself for allowing this predicament to happen.
“I’m going to put these books upstairs. I’ll be right back.” she said before happily trotting up to her bedroom.
As the filly went up the stairs, Shining enveloped the dragon’s tail with his magic and brought Spike up to his eye level, hanging him upside down.
“Been a long time since I’ve seen Twily with that much pep. But moving on.”
“I’m not even going to ask what a young dragon like you is doing alone in Canterlot. But let me be perfectly clear on this. Twily means the world to me, and if you break her heart, then we’re gonna have a problem. You got that?” Spike nodded back nervously, despite knowing that hopefully he wouldn’t be in this time period for much longer. “Good.”

You take the threat and then return fire…..No pun intended.
But then Spike’s lack of self-confidence strikes and he starts avoiding Shining as much as reasonably possible, squirming around when they have to be in a room together. Then guard-boy feels bad and confronts Spike with an apology for the prank, and we have even more feels than we had in the first image.
Or it could be played for laughs– Shining completely approves from the start, but plays up the “overprotective big brother” routine because it’s funny to watch Twilight’s coltfriend squirm. And Twilight’s in on the joke.
I guess it’d make a good dark deconstruction fic - she’s never had a friend or a first crush before coming to Ponyville because her crazy brother is so violently paranoid about someone hurting Twilight that you’re looking at what happens to anyone who says hi to her?
Not a bad theory.
True, you’d think someone other than Fluttershy would comment. My fan-theory is that when Spike was first hatched, he was sort of a child celebrity in Canterlot for the first few years. Then everyone sort of got bored with the novelty, and Celestia put him to work in the castle library to give him a real job to do.
That very well may be. He looks almost like he from the show, which in far future.
Time shenanigans.
Spike got into some time-travel mess and is in the past.
Ponies have never reacted to the fact that Spike is a dragon. I wish they would, but it appears that the entire country just views him as a regular kind.
Never underestimate the power of bronybux.
I know fanon has him thick-headed and overprotective, but c’mon…
Because fan works.
