Have you ever played Blazblue? Hazama (Or Yuuki Terumi) is basically the king of trolls in that game.

That the helmets cause a state of terror that makes the wearer lash out at the enemy.
I personally think that Sombra was experimenting with mind based magic like with whatever he did to block the crystal ponies from remembering anything before his rule and the helmets are the end result.
Makes sense. I don’t know about direct mind control, since his magic only altered perceptions, never really mind control, but it could do something like make them too terrified to do anything but what they’re ordered to.

Well it’s not stated out right more implied. When the helmets are put on the crystal ponies the eyes start to glow green.
And keep in mind Sombra had shown to be capable of mental manipulation.
He caused the whole Crystal Empire to forget anything before his rule.
Plus the fear trap Twilght and Spike were whammied by.
They were mind control helmets? I don’t remember that. There was a lot to those episodes to remember, though, so I wouldn’t be surprised if I missed that bit / don’t remember.
But the helmets brainwash their wears.
I suppose you could argue that some are potentially too risky to leave alive even when subjected to mind control.
Which is why we saw very little of Sombra’s rule >.> …
I am mostly joking around, though. Buuuuuuut at the same time, these things are kinda my headcanons.
I don’t think they’d go into gruesome detail on a TV-Y rated cartoon.
Because they’re actively fighting him and to make an example so that those that he does slap a helmet on are too scared to defect? :q
Why execute somepony when he can slap a helmet on them and bolster his ranks.
