Page 1649 - Dungeons & Ponies, Part 24
8th Feb 2022, 6:00 AM in Intermission 15Author: GreatDinnGuest Author’s Note: “I don’t know if it’s just the circle I talk with/play RPGs with, or if it’s a more widespread thing, but I find it funny how often magic gets conflated with science. I know the classic adage is ‘any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic,’ but so often I find magic gets an entire scientific method applied to it, as though it makes total sense that you can make a certain series of gestures or say a few words and have the firmament bend to your will. It’s never the same either. Depending on the world/game/Dungeon Master, magic will function completely differently. It always has rules (sometimes literally because game), but from my experience we seem to have a very profound inability to just leave it at ‘magic works because it shouldn’t.’”
Transcript:
DM: So, I was thinking it’d be cool to have this separation be in real life too. Can you girls wait in another room for a bit, while we work out what Presto is doing?
Applejack: Works fir me. Ah could use a snack, honestly.
DM: We’ll pick up with the rest of you in Helix in a few minutes.
Pinkie Pie: Okie dokie lokie! Try not to have too much fun without us!
Rainbow Dash: So, what sort of magic does Merlin want me to do?
DM: For now, he just wants you to stir the potion he started brewing. It probably won’t be enough to get rid of the big angry lizard, but experiments are required.
Rainbow Dash: What, he doesn’t know the answer?
DM: There’s not really a right answer to the problem.
Rainbow Dash: Well, there sure seem to be a lot of wrong ones.
DM: Well, yeah, but that’s magical science for you. You keep testing the wrong answers till you find something that works. Then you test that.
Rainbow Dash: So how do you win?
DM: You don’t really “win,” you just…learn better.
Rainbow Dash: You told me this was a game, not another lesson plan!
DM: Huh? …oh! Well, O&O doesn’t have winners-
Rainbow Dash: Then how is it a a game!? Wait. Did I actually fall into another dimension? Is this how games work here?
DM: Let’s back up a bit.
