No worries mate. its all in good fun. Just want to address a couple of points though.
I used Scootalove as an example of the so called “Canon Vs Fanon” argument you see a lot of around here. In that some people (myself included) want to see RD caring more for Scootaloo and teaching her how to fly and helping her succeed. When “Flight to the finish” aired, not much of either things was shown or addressed and if anything some argue that it was a missed opportunity. I’m talking about people i personally know of who disliked the episode simply for that reason. I personally think it was done well. Though while you do raise an interesting point about RD and Scootaloo’s relationship being not as developed as Spike and Twilight’s, there is ample time to develop it in the show. Who knows.
Mate, you are spot on about the writers knowing what they are doing. Personally i think its preposterous that some people keep second guessing and assuming that certain writers don’t know how to write their favorite characters,or assume that “x wrote this episode, therefore it sucks” as i keep reading. I wont ramble too much about that but considering that they only have 20 minutes from which to tell a story with what they are given, my respect for them couldn’t be greater.
“You choose to see it differently, as is your right. I can’t help but see it a different way. I hope that you can see why I do.”
Well I did say that i see where you’re coming from. My philosophy has always been to enjoy something for what it is, not what you desire it to be. End of the day, It is what it is, and there’s not a thing i would change about the show.
Well, thank you for not going off and yelling at me for being an “idiot Spike fan” like most people do around here.
That being said, maybe I am being “hard to please,” but that’s only because the relationship deserves to be explored. I’m not trying to sound contradictory, but if it was “obvious” then I wouldn’t feel this way, would I?
I’ll see your scene from “Crystal Empire” and raise you “Owl’s Well That Ends Well”. In both scenes Twilight deals with Spikes fears. Spike says “I was afraid that you didn’t love me anymore.” Her answer was not “Spike, of course I love you, why would you think I don’t?” It was, essentially, “You’re my most senior employee.” The same is true in “Crystal Empire.” She misses another opportunity by essentially telling him “You’d be very difficult to replace.”
“Scootalove” isn’t a good comparison. Twilight and Spike have a real history, and as far as the series shows us, Scootaloo is simply a fan who has ingratiated herself to Dash. Dash has no real responsibility to Scootaloo… she is not her child. Twilight is, all head canon aside, the closest thing Spike has to family. She is the only one we have ever seen treat him as close to such.
Every child deserves to know that there is one person out there who loves them. At this moment in the series, there is only one character who can do that. Twilight told the other Elements that she loves them in the season three finale, so there’s no reason why she shouldn’t have done it for the child who sleeps next to her bed every night.
I disagree that simply saying so would create unnecessary melodrama. Every good writer knows the difference between show versus tell, and if they had so wanted the staff could paint a picture of this relationship that doesn’t cause worries about how they see one another.
Yes, Twilight and Spike have hugged more than any two characters on the show, but that is always negated. For whatever reason, they have chosen to mark the tender moments they share with moments of Twilight being thoughtless towards Spike. In “Cutie Pox” she goes from calling him “amazing” to throwing him off of her back in the space of about fifteen seconds. Until they show us this relationship tipping towards more than just a sort of co-dependence I’m still going to wince every time she is thoughtless towards him.
You choose to see it differently, as is your right. I can’t help but see it a different way. I hope that you can see why I do.
“Having a concrete example of the trust and concern that exists between the two to allow that kind of contact would put to rest any lingering doubts about Twilight only seeing him as her assistant. “
See now, this is a classic example of hard to please. As a viewer, you don’t need anymore obvious signs that Twilight views him as more more than an assistant. It’s obvious with the interaction and dialogue that they she loves him, as a friend and possibly as a mother/sibling.
Recall the scene in the Crystal Empire where after seeing a vision of Twilight sending Spike away. Twilight Immediately hugs him and reassures him that she will never do that. If that is not a clear cut example of Twilight’s love for Spike, then what is?
To add anymore obvious scenes would turn the subtle character interaction into full blown melodrama and cheese if handled badly, which in turn diminishes the effect.
It’s the same with “Scootalove”. You don’t need an obvious scene of Rainbow Dash acting motherly to Scootaloo to know that she likes her. It’s a foregone conclusion she does like Scootaloo from the interaction.
I understand where your coming from but the point I’m trying to get a across is, too much emphasis and dwelling on sappy scenes diminishes the impact and believability of the relationships of the characters.
@Parzival
Intentional? Perhaps not, but you have to admit that Twilight has been far rougher with Spike than any other grown pony has with a child. She has yelled at him in front of their friends, she had thrown him off her back, and she has picked him up and dropped him. She has flung him against walls with her magic, she has excluded him from group activities, and she has picked him up in her magic and flung him through the air in a way that makes him sick… twice.
Yeah, yeah, yeah… “Rule of Funny.” If that’s how some defend this, then the joke got old a long time ago. Twilight has also shown Spike tenderness, at times, but she has never let him know that he is more to her than a servant, and one that she feels fine walloping across the head for doing stupid things like “telling the truth.”
Twilight’s blind-spot for Spike and his feelings remains her one consistent character flaw.
@Antonyourknee
I would love for the two of them to have a tickle fight in the series. Having a concrete example of the trust and concern that exists between the two to allow that kind of contact would put to rest any lingering doubts about Twilight only seeing him as her assistant.
i don’t get it either. Its delusional at best. blowing things out of proportion i mean. Since when has any of the main characters have intentionally been abusive?
@Background Pony #3960
guys help i’m utterly confused what’s going on here
i thought spike was happy with what he did
But he’s a dragon! and more importantly, a boy!
So its perfectly ok to abuse him!
Bullshit! She’s been terrible to him from the moment we first saw them together!
