Show-canon: Twilight Sparkle said she found the spell in one of the books in the Castle of the Two Sisters.
 
Head-canon: She’s probably been researching polymorph spells since EQG. Having been on the business end of one would’ve certainly sparked her interest in them.

So in theory, Spike could have been turned into a breezie?  
Since Twilight has breezie anatomy scanned into her egghead brain, and even though his anatomy is different from pony anatomy, his body would have been morphed to match a Breezies anatomy as closely as possible?

I think it’s a polymorph spell. Twilight had to scan the breezies then turn her friends into them. She could turn herself and ponies into anything, as long as the can scan it first or has scanned it (not sure if scans are permanent or not).

So wait, is it a spell specific to turning ponies into breezies, or is it a standard polymorph spell? Because every time I try to say its specific to breeziefication, someone tells me its a polymorph spell. But when I say its a polymorph spell, someone tells me its specific to breeziefication.  
And if it is a standard polymorph spell, than the mirror could function on the same magic. That, and it opens a huge can of worm for the series.

It was just your standard polymorph spell. It can turn anypony into any other creature. She just transformed herself and the others into breezies and could be used to transform others into any other creature.

Who just makes a Breezieafication spell? What were Celestia and Luna up to?
