Description
My first “real serious” attempt to complete a painting. I worked on this thing on and off for months.
I’m satisfied with the results; especially Pinkie’s mane and tail.
Painting a picture to completion is one of the hardest things for me to do in art. I tend to overthink the process and often start a piece only to put it away in frustration or boredom. As a result, I’ve had so many false starts with art; so many ideas unfinished… It’s a wonder I finish anything.
Uploading my art here, combined with you guys liking my work; has helped with my motivation to try to take my art more seriously.
Anyway, I would appreciate any critique and/or constructive criticism for this piece. Be honest, but be considerate please!
I want to paint with more confidence and I would like to know what areas of painting I need to focus on to improve.
Done in Photoshop CS6.

My favourite part was about seemingly simple patches of lights giving an impression of the volume to a flat picture.
Thanks for the advice!
Fortunately, I already have that book in my possession.
Unfortunately, I haven’t really looked at it though…I’ll heed your advice, give the book a good read, and try to practice what it preaches.
I’ve been thinking about cell shading even before you suggested it. I’ll give that a try as well.
I think that you could work on the textures.
Have you tried cell-shading?
It allows beginners (like myself) to get a grasp on the object’s form and volume.
Burne Hogarth did a great job explaining the basics in his “Light and Shade”.
