I won’t lie, I had very few hopes for this commission in the large scheme of things. I had the worry that drawing Godzilla would make things complicated, drawn out and just…well, bad. I am not the best at drawing Kaiju, so I took this with a mix of stress and thrill. I was trying to figure things out as I went along, hoping that the end result would work with a modicum of solidity. Whether or not I succeeded that is entirely up to you to decide.
I will just say that Movie Slate booping Godzilla on the snout and then ending with her riding on his shoulder is the best part of this whole exercise. Am I being too self-indulgent for wanting to put my pony next to such an icon and having them being friendly to each other? Yeah. Absolutely. It’s fun. It’s a lot of fun to draw this sort of thing. Don’t let anyone tell you otherwise.
That could make for a good discussion piece for the comments, what do you think about self-inserts and fan characters interacting with characters from other intellectual properties? This can cover from people who Mary Sue their characters to those who write their own interpretations of characters that already exist. We’ve seen a rise on this trend on pop culture a lot, especially when it comes to making adaptations of comics and novels. How far can someone go with their own head canon, and when is it time to stop? Comment away if you’re up for it!
