I’ll offer my explanation for it: The animation style is simplified and details like minute facial features and slight variations in body type does not translate into the artwork. My headcannon is that Equestrians are more horselike than portrayed in FiM and the audience can’t go by animation design.

I find it odd to find body issues with creatures that are not even human. I know as we watch the show we start to see them as human-like in many ways but it still seems odd.
