Hm, that’s a solid analysis. 10/10, would read again. It’s especially interesting to think of how those two have a unique understanding of one another not shared on the same level by any of the others.

Agreed. Its a complicated sempai relationship.

For Sunset, she sees Twilight as the younger, better student that redeemed her and represents her hope. That’s why she holds Twilight in such high regard. But at the same time, she knows how clueless and inexperienced Twilight is, so Sunset is very protective of her. She wants Twilight not to get herself hurt making different mistakes but for the same reasons Sunset had originally. Both of them live(d) to meet Celestia’s grand expectations alone. That is exactly what caused Twilight to fail so much in that movie. Sunset proved herself wiser then her mentor and started Twilight on a better path. Sunset constantly second-guesses herself and asks her friends and Twilight if she’s doing things right, but Sunset has better instincts and moral fiber then she realizes.

For Twilight, it didn’t take long for Twilight to open up more to Sunset Shimmer then she ever did for her friends. The reformed Sunset, who was originally a bully with a potential for good, was now brimming with both care and charisma, which was almost disconcerting when considering her the fallen student of her teacher; making her question her own path. Twilight’s ALWAYS kept an arm’s length of emotional attachment to her friends to always prioritize Celestia, and compared to Sunset, Twilight has a lot of values she lacks in. When Twilight realized how meaningless the princesshood, the title, and the very way she became a princess was, and also saw weakness in herself, she realized she needed her ‘sempai’ to teach her true friendship.

In other words, Sunset has opened her heart to her new friends and become wiser then Twilight in pretty much every aspect, but she has grown so much she only wants to be a better and better friend for her own sake, as well as for her friends. While she still cares about Celestia, she doesn’t live for her expectations or title or anything like that. By learning from each other’s mistakes, they will find their own goals together.

She’s only a few years older than Twilight. And of course, Twilight only surpasses her in one subject. Then again, I’m not even sure about that one any more.

Technically, yes.

It just gets odd now that Twilight has become a teacher to a senior student of the same mentor under whom she herself also studied. And with Sunset there’s still that thing about her “real age” in Equestrian terms.

And everyone else’s for that matter.
