Thorax was born wanting to be friendly instead of “RAAAAAR-HISSSS”, so it could be a genetic abnormality. His back is also a shade of bluish-green while the rest of the drones are a darker blue.

Considering the crystal empire accepts him as a member of their own, i would say its mutual. The crystal ponies love goes to the crystal heart, the crystal hearts stored love gets distributed among the citizens in return. As he is a citizen now, he gets to feed off it.  
It’s not just romantic love they feed off you know

That’s my guess too. It’s too much of a coincidence that the changeling that feeds of the crystal hearts love is the one who gets crystal-i wings  
Though more likely it is that changelings who feed of mutual love instead of stolen love get to look like that
