They are listening to fan feedback in the form of what is actually being discussed about the comic online. You may think that’s unfair because “teh vocal minority,” but your so-called “silent majority” in large part does not even buy the comic, so screw ’em.
This isn’t the kind of thing that should be up for a vote. They should actually listen to what both sides have to say about the issue, because if it comes down to mob rule then they are no better than Ha$bro.
@Background Pony
Ya even though this comment board is pretty much dead, I’m pretty sure that these two are just bboifatz promoting himself ( at least the way it’s worded is telling me that ).
Besides that I know at Comic-Con it was said that Twilicorn may show up in future issues of the comic after they see how Se4 goes.
Currently fans are taking this in one of two ways either:
A) They see what is the fan reaction ( and there reaction ) to Se4 and Twilicorn in general, and if turns out to be negative ( which knowing this fandom and its very, very, VERY vocal minority might be the case ) they will forget about everything from MMC and beyond and create there own continuity ( which I know some fans would prefer ).
or
B) They will wait for 10+ Episodes of Se4 to air before writing any stories that take place post MMC/EQG, as not to mess with the main continuity of the series as much as possible.
I would personally prefer B) as I don’t see the comics as there own thing I see them as side stories of events that take place between Season and Episodes.
If they reach an impasse were they are not sure if to put in Twilicorn or not, I hope they put up a poll with one vote per IP Address instead of just relying on the comments.
One of the comics’ editors has already implied that the comics may be shifting away from the show’s canon, and presumably that would be because they are easier to write when they don’t have to make predictions about the future of the show, but given the controversy around Twilicorn I would say that’s a valid reason as well.
A large chunk of the fandom doesn’t want Twilicorn in the comics, and the fans who like Twilicorn will still read the comics even if this is an alternate universe where Twilight has a different destiny. Giving the comic its own continuity and keeping Twilicorn out is a win-win.
If Hasbro REALLY wanted to “sync up” everything, they would have told IDW about the Twilight Princess thing well in advance.
In that light, Hasbro does, to a degree, need to keep IDW happy. If IDW states strongly to Hasbro that including Alicorn Twilight will hurt their comic’s sales, Hasbro might back off, because IDW pays them for the right to make money off of the IP.
It’s too early to tell at this point, but from everything we’ve seen, the comic does have a lot more creative freedom behind it than the show currently does, and the writers are just as in-touch with us as the ones for the show, except without as much harassment from Hasbro. I don’t know what the future holds for the comic, but at the very least, it will still be Twilicorn-free for a fair while after the show is not.
“1) Twily will need to learn how to fly from somepony”
Like Scootaloo needs to learn how to fly from Rainbow Dash?
“2) Twily will have to learn that having wings won’t alienate her.”
Like Rarity learned to keep her old friends close when she got in with the Canterlot aristocrats in “Sweet and Elite?”
Turning Twilight Sparkle into an Alicorn princess is only necessary to keep things fresh if you think Twilight’s character is too boring to write good stories around without changing her into something else.
The Simpsons has been on TV for almost as long as I’ve been alive. MLP has had three seasons. Try again.
There are interesting things that I can see being done with it, but since this is a kids show none of it will happen. Namely, it would involve Twilight becoming more distant from her friends and coming to regret her choice to ascend, and either living with the consequences (mature / grimdark version) or finding a way out (the more typical “happy ending” scenario, where things go back to normal at the end).
The most interesting theme that could be explored with alicorn twilight would be immortality blues, although that is one that I guarantee the show is going to avoid like the plague. They have yet to even address how Alicorn immortality works in the show, so I doubt that we can expect them to have a meaningful discussion of what it will be like for Twilight to have to bury all of her friends someday.
As far as maintaining the spirit of the show is concerned, I do not think Twilight’s destiny should be princesshood. The show is meant to be light and enjoyable which means that the deeper issues of alienation from her friends are off limits, so there is very little that can be done with the scenario other than turning Twi into an OP Mary-Sue.
Whats worse, changes over time - allowing new stories to be created,
I can think of a ton with Alicorn Twilight such as:
OR
No changes, ever. Simpsons style.
Because if you want the show to become like the Simpsons that’s basically what you’re suggesting.
Least we’re not sitting here panicing at every slightest little change
and yes this Alicorn Twilight this is not as large a change as everypony is making it out to be, shes just getting FREAKING WINGS.
Twilicorn can be handled well, and normally I would trust these writers to do so. However, the way things seem to be going, it seems like the marketers have taken over completely, and marketing execs can never be trusted. EVER.
Marketing people are extremely shortsighted; they don’t understand that when you have a multimedia franchise, both sides need to complement each other well. If the marketing gimmicks are too obvious and/or poorly-done, it turns people off.
I’m not an optimistic person by nature, but I am usually willing to give those with a proven track record the benefit of the doubt. However, the comments from Meghan in EW do not inspire confidence. Rather, it makes me think that the writing duties may as well be handed off to myopic marketing men desperate to turn FiM into a clone of G3.5.
Seriously, they could announce they were killing off half of the mane six and replacing them with new characters and new toys, and I think some people would still say “calm down, the show isn’t ruined. You haven’t even seen the episode yet!”
Everyone has a breaking point, and just because Hasbro has not found yours yet does not mean they are incapable of running the show into a ditch.
Knock it off with the “Dead” shit. It’s the worst term to use if you want to make a serious point.
I certainly hope Hasbro doesn’t force Twilicorn into the comics, but at this point, given the Hasbro marketing execs flexing their corporate muscles, anything is unfortunately possible. We’ll probably find out by the end of the year. If they do force Twilicorn on IDW, then I will agree with the neighsayers that the franchise is dead.
FYI, I was collecting the Sonic comics when its design change happened. The explanation they gave for it was ridiculous at best, but at least they tried. Unfortunately, it happened at a time when the writing quality was really low. Right after the design change, they had to do the Sonic Adventure tie-in… and Sega didn’t bother giving them any info on the game. The result was one of the worst stories in the comic’s history.
Also, in the Archie “Sonic X” comics, they managed to have it be somewhat in the canon of the anime “Sonic X” show, but take place before the “Metarex” third season. So they could possibly do the same with the comic for awhile until it catches up with the show. Though, it’s also possible for the “Sonic X” comic to be a different canon from the anime, as well. Depends on what the reader wants to think of it as.
Honestly I don’t mind if she stays an alicorn, or not.
