You answered your own question; It has protein in it, so considering it’s a component, it offers itself up to an endless number of jokes, puns, and innuendos pertaining to it.
Where does the whole protein thing come from anyway? I mean sure it has protein in it but it’s hardly the primary component.

Soft foods with high sugar contents. Her body breaks down food via a chemical reaction with sugar as opposed to normal digestion. So things like fruit and honey in the wild, and any candy or dessert items if they live amongst ponies.
