The Hartford Whalers were a professional ice hockey team based for most of its existence in Hartford, Connecticut, U.S.A.. The club played in the World Hockey Association (WHA) from 197279 and in the National Hockey League (NHL) from 197997. In 1997, the franchise relocated to North Carolina, where it became the Carolina Hurricanes, thus resulting in Connecticut joining 20+ other states with no major league sports team.
