What? No, there’s a lot you can learn or figure out about space before you ever get there.
For one thing, it’s readily apparent on mountains and during high flights that the air is thinner, lower pressure, and colder at high altitude than it is at ground level (and therefore that air must be a compressible fluid, which implies that “voids” must exist between the particles of which it is made up).
See also mercury and water barometers, high quality telescopes, vacuum pumps, Newton’s science of optics, etc., all available by the c. 17th century. Plus weather balloons and powered flight in the late 19th/early 20th century, well before humans got anywhere close to space in the 40s with the advent of rocketry.
