Considering that the fake corpse accurately resembles AJ own grandmother. It’s not surprising she’d be freaked out. Many people are especially superstitious of this sort of thing.

I thought there were surprisingly dark moments in this episode, but this was personally the darkest. It’s one thing to make someone believe that’s his/her dead grandma, but doing this to the person who has lost both parents before. Now that’s pretty f-yay up.

And making animated kid show versions to Rated-R movies. (Police Academy, Toxic Avenger, Rambo, Robocop to name a few.)
 
That stuff wouldn’t fly nowadays… Though, oddly there are “Halo,” and “Call of Duty” building block toys in kiddy toy aisles of stores. (And both are M-rated games. Basically, “R-rated.” And oddly, a lot of parents allow their kids to play those kinda games online, and such.)

So did the ‘80s. Ever seen Nintendo Power’s famed second issue cover for Castlevania 2? (Probably the only time we get to see an actual cow heart in anything Nintendo-related.)
 
They had some creepy stuff for kids back then if you google ‘em. The Inhumanoids, Mad Scientist, the Garbage Pail Kids collector cards, and such.

I don’t mind the ESRB rating system really. (Unless it leads to certain things like Sega editing out the “Streets of Rage” games out of “Sonic Gems Collection” just to maintain an E-rating… Ironically, that was shortly before the E-10 rating was introduced, and the “Streets of Rage” rerelease games got that rating instead of “T” like they feared.)
 
Despite Nintendo of America’s strict content guidelines back then, (which they phased out once the ESRB was formed) some games still got away with a lot.  
Heck, “Bionic Commando” featured The final boss, Mr. Hitler’s head exploding.  
It happens pretty quick, but if you view the frames individually, it’s quite gruesome. How that got by NOA is anyone’s guess.
 
And let’s not forget the creepy imagery, and blood in “Monster Party.”

Plus games didn’t have the BS ratings they have right now. Almost anything went. And they pushed things to the limit.

I think that’s one thing I miss about old games, the graphics were so simple you could interpretate them in other ways if you wish.
 
Surprisingly, “EarthBound Beginnings” is the only T-rated NES game. (Though, it’s not very edgy/violent.)  
I think if they rereleased “Uninvited” it would definitely be T-rated now. Maybe the same for “Monster Party,” and “Maniac Mansion.” (If it’s the unedited “hamster in the microwave” version.)

The guidelines DO define semi grimdark as dark but not crushingly depressing. Which is what this is.

Li’l girls like violence too, in fact that’s why a lot of them like so-called “boy” shows/movies/games. The idea they can’t handle anything “edgy/humorous” is why shows like MLP:FiM that are genuinely good, and mostly a “girl’s show” are rare nowadays. (That’s why I applaud Lauren Faust, and the rest of the show staff for their MLP G4 reboot.)
 
In a way the scene was kinda funny to, getting to see this cutesy cartoony midget-horse toy be so badass.

Heck, I was the one defending the “Twilight VS Tirek” battle scene, when some Tumblr fake-feminists were trying to claim it was “to extreme/edgy for little girls, and it was to cater to bronies.” (Which in itself is ironically sexist, and not giving the kids’ enough credit. Even li’l girls like epic battles.)
