Actually the writers confirmed in a Q&A that Nightmare Moon is essentially a split personality born from Luna bottling up her negative emotions.

Okay, if you want to see that as being actually her and not merely a dark, warped version of herself she succumbed to in her jealousy and rage, fine.
I STILL don’t see why she would be offended by this scenario.

Nightmaremoon IS Luna, there is nothing around it. The only thing the episode did was that she finally forgave herself for her actions of the past. Saying nightmaremoon isn’t luna would belittling Lunas effort and pain in that episode.
I saw that as coming to terms with that being something she did in the past that she no longer has to constantly carry around with her as penance.
Actually from what i gathered, it wasn’t about accepting it was not her, but instead the opposite, it was accepting that she DID cause all of that, but everyone forgave her and it was time she forgave herself for her OWN actions.
Um, I never said that I thought her ear was her horn. I said that I didn’t notice that her horn wasn’t coming out of her forehead & that there was a nothing in its place.
I always knew that the ear wasn’t the horn!

Technically, it vaguely is yes, but after Do Princess Dream of Magic Sheep she seems to have come to terms with that being a separate part of herself that she’s no longer harboring guilt over.
