It’s called a portmanteau, BP. Lots of languages do it. It’s not just something shippers do to make things sound cutesy or whatever, it’s an actual linguistic system to create a new, singular idea from two (or more) originally separate ideas.

Brunch, Spork, Chortle, Brainiac, Mathlete, Smog, Cheeseburger, just to name a few.

Hell, even “Brony” is just a portmanteau of “Bro” and “Pony.”
